Great, great anthem! Highly suggest it. This song was actually
written by David Bowie. Why does Bowie always use so many chords
in his songs? Well this is a great singalong, so it's good to
know it. Noel Gallagher STOLE part of this song to use in the
chorus to 'Stand By Me'.
Beware that D and D/A are NOT the same chord. I know many people
always play the open A string when they're playing a D chord, but
in this song you should not play the A string when you're playing
the D, but let it ring out when you're playing the D/A chord. This
song has a really cool descending bassline, but when you're playing
alone it's important to try to let the bass notes ring out clearly,
so you get the feel of the song.
In verse 1 he sings 'Wendy's stealing clothes from Mark's & Sparks'.
I saw the lyrics for the Bowie version and there it is 'Wendy's
stealing clothes from unlocked cars'. I'm sure Mott The Hoople say
'Mark's & Sparks'. What the hell are they talking about? I'm not
english myself, but are they talking about 'Mark's & Spencer' or
what? Tell me if you know, because this lyrics sounds really stupid
to me. (actually, the rest of the lyrics sound really stupid too ;)
I know you're getting tired of my babbling, but one last thing:
You might possibly play the Am7/G (302010) as just a regular
Am7 (x02010), and sometimes in the verses and chorus it sounds
to me like the Bm(x24432) is a Bm7(x24232). Try it and see what
you think. I personally use Am7/G and Bm.

INTRO:
------
I don't think the bend at the end of the intro is
correct, but I can't seem to get it properly. It's
played by two guitars I think. If you know how to play
it better, mail me.

    b = bend note up
    r = release bend

VERSE 1:
--------
      D Dmaj7
Billy rapped all night about his suicide,
         Bm D/A
How he'd kick it in the head when he was twenty-five
F#m A Asus4 A
Speed jive, don't wanna stay alive when you're twenty-five
    D Dmaj7
And Wendy's stealing clothes from Mark's & Sparks(?) and
Bm D/A
Freddy's got spots from ripping off the stars
F#m A Asus4 A
From his face - a funky little boat race

PRE-CHORUS:
-----------
    Em Em7
The television man is crazy
             F# Bm
sayin' we're juvenile delinquent wrecks
      G D A Asus4 A
Oooh, man, I need a TV when I've got T. Rex

Oh brother, ya guessed - I'm a dude yeah

[In the chorus, the words in () is the bullshit that
 the lead singer's saying.]

CHORUS: [see below for the electric guitar]
-------
D Dmaj7 Bm
All the young dudes (hey, dudes)
D/A Am
Carry the news (where are ya?)
Am7/G F
Boogaloo dudes (stand up, c'mon)
C G C A D
Carry the news
D Dmaj7 Bm
All the young dudes (I wanna hear you)
D/A Am
Carry the news (I wanna see you)
Am7/G F
Boogaloo dudes (I wanna talk to you, all of you)
C G C A D
Carry the news

What the electric guitar is doing in the chorus is basically
just picking out the bass line. If you're playing this in a
band with an electric, the electric should play this:

  CHORUS-RIFF:
    D Dmaj7 Bm D/A Am Am7/G
E|---------------------------------------------------------------
B|---------------------------------------------------------------
G|---------------------------------------------------------------
D|---------------------------------------------------------------
A|--5---------4---------2---------0---------0--------------------
E|----------------------------------------------------3----------

    F C G C A D
E--------------------------------------|
B--------------------------------------|
G--------------------------------------|
D--------------------------------------|
A-------------3---------2---3---4---5--|
E---1----------------------------------|

VERSE 2: [play like verse 1]
--------
Lucy's looking sweet, coz he dresses like a queen,
but he can kick like a mule, its a real mean team
But we can love, oh yes, we can love
And my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones
We never got it off on that revolution stuff
What a drag - too many snags

PRE-CHORUS: [play like first pre-chorus]
-----------
Well I drunk a lotta wine and I'm feelin' fine
Gonna race some cat to bed
Is that concrete all around or is it in my head?
Yeah, I'm a dude yeah

CHORUS: [play like first chorus]
-------
All the young dudes (hey dudes)
Carry the news (where are ya?)
Boogaloo dudes (stand up)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (I wanna hear ya)
Carry the news (I wanna see you)
Boogaloo dudes (I wanna relate to you)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (what dudes?)
Carry the news (I don't see any dudes, c'mon)
Boogaloo dudes (I wanna kiss you)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (hey you there, with the glasses)
Carry the news (I want you)
Boogaloo dudes (...)
Carry the news

...then keep playing the chorus and fade out. I can't hear
any more of what the lead singer is saying. It's not
important anyway. Just make up some bullshit.
