April 2005

Egads! I was just netsurfing when it dawned on me that it's April already! Time has been flying because I have been having fun. Hope you're enjoying yourself this month, too, d. You were in Texas during SXSW?! Unbelievable! That event is the now certifiably the grandaddy of music events here in the States right up there with the Coachella Festival. It's like a Pandora's Box, but in a good way, you know?

So did you catch G at SXSW?! I totally slacked off and missed the Boston gig and wasn't feeling up for the D.C. gig due to a bad case of migraines and congestion from the inhalation of mucho amounts of tobacco smoke from the gig the night before. However! I did catch G at the North Star Bar in Philly and what a show it was! It was a teeny tiny joint with a cavernous stage and audience area which reminded me of a smaller version of the Electric Ballroom in Camden. When G walked in with some people I was sitting at the edge of the bar conversing with a fellow blur fan, Jess, from Pittsburgh (please send me that set list, Jess, I'd appreciate it very much). He was wearing a vintage looking jacket with a blue Fred Perry polo shirt and blue jeans and brown suede shoes. I was going to go up and say a few words to him, but chickened-out due to my shyness (hard to believe, huh?)

After a few minutes it looked like the door opening time was fast approaching and people were forming a line (in which G also seemed to be standing funnily enough), so I went to stand in line and a young lady trying to resuscitate Y100 the radio station started talking to me about that and various topics. I noticed G noticed me but I ended up playing it all cool and not even sending a smile his way (sorry, G! I was very shy that night. Do forgive). Finally the door opened and I snagged a spot right smack dab in the middle right in front of G's micstand. The two opening acts were decent (the lead singer from 22-20s has replaced the Jets as my "most overwhelmingly masculine dominant musical artist that overwhelms me"). Yikes...And then G gets onstage and there are cans of "red bulls" startegically positioned for his drinking pleasure. He seemed to be in a not-so-good mood during the initial three songs or so, but then started getting into it really when the technical difficulties cleared up and the juice was turned up. It was quite a change to see him both play the guitar and sing vocals for all of the songs. He seemed to be really enjoying himself. It was so great to be able to hear him play live again after such a long time. *thinks*the last time I saw him live was...my God! 6 years ago or so already?! I believe it was the New York gig when blur came for the 13 tour here. Frankly, I missed his guitarplaying...the intensity of it...the quirkiness of it...the brilliant artistry of it...

Contemplatively yours,
frances
