February 1999
Listening to the Peel Acres live version of "Popscene," I was one day reminded of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll." The two songs share the same energy, the same adrenalin-stimulating sonic rush, the same sense of urgency. Moreover, the titles are similar: "Popscene" and "Rock and Roll." You can sing those famous lyrics, "been a long time since I rock and rolled..."over the intro of "Popscene" after dave comes in on his drums and it meshes exquisitely with the instrumental portion of the song. "Popscene" has "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" in the Peel Acres version and "Rock and Roll" has got its "ooh yeah, ooh yeah, ooh yeah, ooh yeah." There are also repetitions in the lyrics that indicate that it's time for us all to party hard.
"Popscene," though coming from blur who called themselves a "pop band" at that time, is a rock and roll number. It was a foreshadowing of things to come, especially "Song 2." It's a classic, right up there with "Rock and Roll." Whereas blur gave us this gem by the time Modern Life is Rubbish, their second album came out, it took Led Zep 'til their fourth album to give the masses "Rock and Roll." Now what that does tell us about blur?
