TOPIC #2: ROCKABILLY
Rockabilly?!? What the heck is rockabilly!

Well, ya take three or four guys, give em some instruments, a quart of moonshine (each), make 'em listen to some old blues and gospel stuff and when their hillbilly roots kick in, you'll hear "rockabilly" music!!

Simple enough?!?

Well, actually rockabilly is a little more complex than that, but that gives you the idea.

Don't believe me?

Listen to any ol' drunk hick that recorded back in the early to mid 50"s and you'll hear what I mean!

Listen to ELVIS's first recordings. Those ol' hillbillies playin' on those SUN recordings were just as wasted as the next guy!!

The finer points of rockabilly...

What makes rockabilly, rockabilly?

The toughest question nobody can really answer. Everyone has their own opinion. I think anything beyond a three piece combo becomes a rock n' roll or country western band. The inclusion of any instrument(s) beyon upright bass, guitar( big fat hollowbodied ax), and drums is about it.

Piano is out!

Fiddle,?

WAIT A MINUTE!!! You didn't even think that at this page site!!!

Steel guitars can be shoved somewhere dark also!!

I'm not talkin' hillbilly or country! I'm talkin' REAL MUSIC!!

BACK TO INDEX

SAXOPHONE, that's out too, except for rock 'n roll! What did these drunks know about real instruments and music anyway?!?

I'm just kiddin' here, let's not kill anyone or anything.

Rockabilly is extremely cool music. So is SURF, but more on that in a couple of months.

Well, one good thing about country music (YES, there actually is something good). Guys like Webb Pierce, Hank Williams,(not his blockheaded putzy son), and Buck "HEE HAW" Owens did quote rockabilly. Yup, Buck recorded one of the coolest rockabillies for a country guy!!

Then we had tons of rockabilly guys who got royally screwed by their managers when they started becoming famous and were forced into doing crappy music.

Buddy Holly really got it bad from good ol' Norm.

What did he know about music? The only real rockabilly Norm produced was "Rockola Ruby" by Sonnee West!!

Again my opinion here, but look at Johnny Burnette when Snuff and the boys got a hold of him over at Liberty! The same thing happened to Eddie Cochrane there!!

"Dreamin'" and crap like that were the results. In fact if you heard those tunes first, you'd think that Johnny had no real talent!!

Listen to The Burnette Trio's Coral album or singles. These are among the coolest and most widely known rockabilly recordings ever!

Paul Burlison is probably the most copied rockabilly player next to Eddie Cochrane, Carl Perkins, and Scotty Moore (of Elvis fame).

Of course there are hundreds of good tunes out there, but this is just a general overview of the more widely known rockabilly artists

You can email me if you have any feedback or suggestions. (Try to be kind)
