title: crafts

Written by: janeeta on 8/4/98 at 5:26PM. everyone here seems to be swapping clothes, records, and recipes... so now let's swap craft ideas. i just made a bunch of snazzy magnets. i went to the craft store, bought a couple of sheets of that magnetic paper stuff with the sticky backs. then i butchered my krs catalog, a few zines and some magazines and stuck the pictures to the magnetic paper. then i cut them all apart, and *voila*, instant punkergrrrl magnets. whoo! i might decorate some of them with glitter and rhinestones. :) also, i am thinking about decorating some of those light switch covers for my new apartment. what have you been making?

Replies:

Reply from: KF on 8/4/98 at 5:52PM. lovely, janet. :) I too am fond of making magnets, tho I havent done it in awhile.. I have a couple on my stove.. one that says "bio chemists have more fun" and a lois one.. they are super fun to make.. I have been drawing stickers and stuff cuz I have a bunchola of sticker paper.. other than that.. not too much.. :) keep the crafties going!

Reply from: gemma on 8/4/98 at 6:19PM. i've been doing paper cuts. making paper cut presents. fun little recipe cards with good food on the back and a pro girl cut on the front:) i must admit miss nikki mclure gave me that idea. i've been sewing some halter tops and was inspired to find my fisher price loom but coudlnt:)

Reply from: janeeta on 8/4/98 at 6:25PM. what are paper cuts?

Reply from: gemma on 8/4/98 at 6:37PM. paper cuts are like.... drawings, but you use paper instead of pens.... here's one that i made today.. very basic.. looks better from far away though. [Image] it'll look better if you stand like five feet away from yr screen:)

Reply from: janeeta on 8/4/98 at 6:38PM. ooooooh... :) that is so very very neato and pretty. but... i still want more ideas! share, people, share!

Reply from: alyssa marie on 8/4/98 at 7:55PM. i've been making magnets too. also, i've been cutting out pictures i like from everywhere for a couple years now so i decided to start doing decoupage. yea, i know it's dorky. the article in bust this issue made me feel a bit not so grandma about it. i couldn't find a guest book for my place that i liked, so i'm making one. i do cross-stitch. i sew. i decorate frames. i like to fix up old furniture. i like to make ugly things from thrift stores pretty. fanzines are pretty crafty and i'm working on a new one of those right now. i need other good things to do too though. what can i make? what can i re-do or fix? what can i make pretty in pink? 'she's crafty and she's just my type'

Reply from: An anonymous viewer on 8/4/98 at 7:57PM. what's decoupage?

Reply from: hockensmith on 8/4/98 at 8:46PM. I buy plastic toys and melt them. I've been working on sets of army men; melting on various appendages/staples/wheels, pushing hot wires through their warm bodies (how romantic!), beautifying their facial features, painting them, etc. Would you like a set, Janeeta?

Reply from: janeeta on 8/4/98 at 8:52PM. yeah i would love some bianca! oh my i like you more and more everytime i hear from you. i can't wait to meet you! i really do have to get you a package together. you're just too rad for me not to send you gifts. and if i find any plastic toys that i don't want, i'll send them your way babydoll. xoxo

Reply from: alyssa marie on 8/4/98 at 8:53PM. decoupage is where you take like wood or mirror or glass or whatever(i'm using composition notebooks) and you use decoupage glue to glue pictures on and make a collage then you go over the whole thing with decoupage glue and it makes it so it won't come apart and you've got personalized rad whatever.

Reply from: An anonymous viewer on 8/4/98 at 9:03PM. whay is decoupage glue? does it have a specific name? generic brands? how much does it cost? can i get it at hobby lobby?

Reply from: PunkGirlie on 8/4/98 at 9:12PM. I take old powder compacts and clean them out. Then cut stuff out of magazines or draw stuff and glue it to the front of the compact. Use glitter nailpolish to make it look pretty and keep your decorations on. Ta da.. you have a mirrior and somewhere to put some change or whatever will fit. Ill make you people some if ya want one, theyre really cute!

Reply from: janeeta on 8/4/98 at 9:12PM. ugh. hobby lobby. yeah you can probably get it there. i would just look for glues and then look on bottles and see if it says "for decoupaging" or something like that. if i remember correctly, it's a thick white stuff. it looks transluscent when it's wet, but then it dries transparent. now excuse me. i have to go watch the culture club on letterman. whoo!

Reply from: janeeta on 8/4/98 at 9:16PM. PunkGirlie, that is such a neat idea! Reminds me of something too... My mom made me these rad canisters to keep stuff (pencils, change, etc.) in. She took soup cans and then glued tisse paper all over it (with decoupage glue!). Then she whipped out the fab hot glue gun and glued all kinds of trinkets, feathers, rhinestones, furry bits, and stuff like that all over them. They are BRIGHT, very gaudy, kind of glam, a little tacky, and hellarad.

Reply from: devilgirl on 8/4/98 at 9:29PM. i take blank books, like composition books, or hard cover journals...what not, and cut out stuff that is pleasing to my eye, and tape it on with big fat clear tape, use glitter and fun stuff too! then you have an awesome poetry/short story/thought journal. i also make tons of envelopes, i don't even use real envelopes for letters anymore, i just rip cool pictures outta magazines and fold them around my letter, and tape it all together. i make stickers either on my computer, or i just draw right on the sticker paper. i make iron on transfers on my computer, and make t shirts and patches, and i iron them on underwear, sweatshirts, any thing that i can find that is blank. okayyyyy..more later xoxo carra

Reply from: PunkGirlie on 8/4/98 at 9:43PM. thanks Janeeta. I do that too devilgirl , i cant stand having plain stuff. I use that clear packing tape.

Reply from: alyssa marie on 8/4/98 at 10:24PM. oh yea, i also make sock monkeys. i'm way behind on them though. i've got like 5 in the making that were supposed to be christmas presents. oh well. better late than never.

Reply from: fern on 8/5/98 at 0:07AM. damn i missed boy george! grr.. oh well. i used to do macrame, but that hobby was very short lived. right now i am planning on making myself a celtic elvish outfit. (do sewing crafts count?) like i am going to make a nice white dress, and do some fancy schmacy embroidery work on it. and then i will make a really nice tunic. i am thinking of going out for some expensive red or green velvet, but i dunno. i havent decided yet. i would get blue but im sure they wouldnt have that. oh well.. well anyways, i got the idea off of this magic the gathering card (no i dont play mtg) of this elvish ranger whos outfit i fell in love with. i am dumb.. oh well.. i am also still planning on making a cat suit. with some fake tiger print fashion fur, and black leggings and a black tank top, like im going to make a skirt, and sew cuffs on the leggings, and fur up the front/back and straps of my tank top. and if i have enough fur left over i might make a tail. it will look snazzy. ok late. carrie.

Reply from: hlun on 8/5/98 at 0:32AM. yay! i luuv making stuff!! firstly, my current favourites are tacky plastic jewellery, out of either beads(boring) or my favorite, out of fluro party straws, or fruit loops!! yum!! oh dear. a flu induced mental blank has hit me...

Reply from: pixie top on 8/5/98 at 8:33AM. you can transform and old lunchbox (or tupperware container even) by gluing big sheets of fake fur of fuzzy stuff around them (the sure to make the seems not visible.) i have a pink one, a red one, and a leopard print one.....you can buy them too! xoxo pixie ---i have many ideas---jusss wait!--

Reply from: leahlocks on 8/5/98 at 9:06AM. i just do beaded necklaces. but they always turn out really super cute. i'll make necklaces for anybody that makes me tapes or crafts.

Reply from: princess tory on 8/5/98 at 9:16AM. wow . . . what awesome ideas! i'm going to go iron pictures on my underwear this weekend.

Reply from: peesha on 8/5/98 at 9:22AM. I use fur to make anything. I have re-done furniture from thrift stores.. stripped it painted it and made fur cushions for the chair. I also re-do clothes to make them suit me. I am currently working on a black bondage dress. I used to make suitcases and little hatboxes look neat in the same way you make your magnets Janeeta.. I would take cool pics from magazines and glaze them on top of the boxes/suitcases. I sewed fur onto my army navy black backpack and I have done the same for some of my friends. I made a badass blue furry big shoulder slung purse out of an old fuzzy bathrobe for a friend. I have made tons of other stuff but they escape me at the moment. --xoxox peesha

Reply from: nikkibutt on 8/5/98 at 9:57AM. i'm obsessed with lamination. if you go to a store like rag shop, they sell this self-stick laminating material in different patterns (shiny, 'leather,' 'linen,') all made of plastic. i laminate anything that can be laminated. i'd laminate myself if i could. lamination! lakjaljwelrjw;et i do screen and block printing sometimes. i haven't done either in a really long time, though. do any of you decorate your monitors? i'm a hologram junkie (as those of you who know me know), and i completely covered my monitor in hologram shelf paper from Villiage Lighting in manhattan. does that count as a craft?

Reply from: princess tory on 8/5/98 at 10:14AM. i had to go before i was finished :( i decorate my monitor . . . i tape eyes i've cut out of magazines all over it . . . it looks like drew's room in mad love as for crafts . . . hmmm . . . my sister was going to make me a quilt out of old t-shirts & sheets . . . i make tons & tons of candles . . . i got shrinkie-dink stuff from hobby lobby; draw pictures w/ markers, shrink it in the oven, & i made key chains & buttons for my backpack . . . i glue glitter & stars on my barettes before i'll wear them . . . i bought white pillowcases & decorated them w/ fabric markers & iron ons & then stuff 'em

Reply from: Tracey on 8/5/98 at 10:51AM. wow... lots of creative ideas here... ack... the only thing i've been doing is working... and sittin' on my ass, hhhmmm i wonder if eating candy while typin' on a keyboard counts as a hobby?... though... i've been working on some paintings... rather... ideas for some... hhhmmm... though... i once made a... er... side table using milk crates, "borrowed" from work and other fine grocery locations, glueing/duck taping/whatever two of them together... making a collage... putting it on top and then securing a plastic or glass cover to the top, as to protect any cool thing i might have done... i was sooo proud of it... it might not be much too look at... but it's mine :) and it's stable... tracey

Reply from: noah brownstone on 8/5/98 at 10:51AM. I'm sort of partial to working with cigar boxes, which can be bought in tobacco stores for a dollar or two and turned into various contraptions. For example, I lined one box with hideous plaid fabric, glued a photo in the bottom, and rigged up a christmas bulb and switch so that I had a stand-up photo display with a light in it. The lighting component was made out of a small christmas bulb, a nine-volt battery, and a toggle switch -- pretty simple, really.

Reply from: alyssa marie on 8/5/98 at 3:10PM. i also have this idea of making a quilt out of old pretty hankies. just sew them together with a solid back and some batting in between. i'm still collecting the hankies. it won't be big enough for my bed, just a cuddle up on the couch with my girlfriend blanket.

Reply from: xoxoerin on 8/5/98 at 3:47PM. hey ummm im grounded now so i have lots of time to make stuff! i love sending mail and i try to decorate the package and all... other than that i sew, yesterday i made a new backpack, and i think i will make a dress today. i also got a slik screaner, so i make t shirts and patches (if anyone wants one e mail me) and i got some decoupage so ive been going crazy with it, i put pictures all over my dresser, and im going to make some neat jewlery boxes for my friends..... if anyone wants to trade mail with me please e mail me, i am a lonely grrrl :) xoxox erin

Reply from: xoxoerin on 8/5/98 at 3:48PM. oh yeah where do you buy sticker paper?? xo

Reply from: peesha on 8/5/98 at 4:19PM. Leah I cannot believe what your post was about!!!!!!!! I cannot wait for you to get your package from me and see what I made you!!1I love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!---xoxx peesha

Reply from: janeeta on 8/5/98 at 4:21PM. i think you can find sticker paper at office supply stores.

Reply from: KF on 8/5/98 at 4:24PM. i'd love to trade someting with you erin though I don't have much crafty things going at the moment. :) you can get sticker paper anywhere from wal-mart(gag wretch) to office max. yer best bet is an office supply store though. wow I love reading about all yer great projects and ideas, kiddos!! oh yeah.. just so you know, hobby lobby is directly funded and owned by the christian coalition.. thought you might like to know. my friend applied their and she got this crazy questionaire asking all kinds of insane religious and other questions.. they're fucking nuts...

Reply from: fuz on 8/5/98 at 5:11PM. STEAL FROM HOBBY LOBBY!!!!!

Reply from: cherry bomb on 8/5/98 at 5:34PM. i do some crafty things. i like to make this knotted bracelets. i don't know what yr supposed to call them... most people call them friendship bracelets or "guatamlean bracelets" i don't know the history behind them but they look pretty. i like to decoupage too but haven't done it in a while. i like doing it on card board hat boxes and such to store my stuff. i've tried glues other than "decoupage glue" before and found they don't look as nice when yr done (it looks really cloudy after it dries). i like a more clear look when i decoupage... so ummm yah. i also cross-stitch. i used to make all sorts of little pictures and frame them in tiny frames and give them to my grammas and aunts for christmas and stuff. the thread i buy is cheap (cuz i buy it in jumbo packs). the stuff you cross-stich on is a little more expensive if you buy the nice stuff. and i buy little cheap frames that are onsale or i used to be used for something else. it would only cost me a couple bucks and a couple hours and i'd have a personalized little present for them. also love the sticker thang. i also love gluing things onto other things... i used to have an old note-book covered in coloured paper clips and a binder covered in pennies and a hat box covered in orange and green and white tic tacs but that started to smell funny after about 6 or 7 months. i think it must have gotten wet/moist or something. can't think of anything else right now. oh do any of you HATE sparkles? i do... everyone always tells me i should add sparkles to my stuff.... ick! i haven't made anything in a long time. i'm so lazy. xox angela kay

Reply from: leahlocks on 8/5/98 at 7:50PM. okay alysia, now you've done it. *packing her things... getting ready to camp out at the post office and tackle every mailman she sees looking for the package alysia sent*

Reply from: PunkGirlie on 8/5/98 at 8:03PM. I wanna trade junk erin sounds fun

Reply from: An anonymous viewer on 8/5/98 at 9:06PM. toppers! more ideas...

Reply from: An anonymous viewer on 8/5/98 at 9:43PM. my lastest craft project involved cutting out the girls on the covers of old patterns and glueing them onto a cool mini suitcase box then i covered it all in varnish and glitter to make it shiny. waahlaa! an instant cool box to carry around. i like to get end tables and redo them, painting them or decorating with photos or stickers... **punkgirlie- i would love one of those compacts. email me to tell me the details k? **niki- my monitor is decorated with stickers (sanrio, bugs, sticker pictures) its so much more interesting :) **erin- id like to trade something for a jewelry box... anything yr looking for? xotiffini (ps.. this is the neatest post ever :)

Reply from: tiffini on 8/5/98 at 9:48PM. oops that last post was from me :)

Reply from: lindsey on 8/5/98 at 10:01PM. my lastest thing is making furniture... tommorrow i'm gonna bug my dad to teach me how to use the blowtorch so i can fuse metal together. I made this really awesome end table a little while ago by hot glue gunning together over 50 jolt cola bottles into a cube. i secured a plexi glass top with these big bolts. it's sturdy and really neet looking. i used to buy a jolt cola every day after school 2 years ago. hey, doesn anyone know where to find shrinky dink in canada???

Reply from: janeeta on 8/5/98 at 10:08PM. oh all of you are so awesome. i just made me a neat-o day planner thingie for school. wheee! next, i am going to make some decorations for my apartment, i think. wheee!

Reply from: kay-o-lay on 8/5/98 at 11:32PM. I decorate my room with the front of snazzy cereal boxes.

Reply from: why on 8/6/98 at 1:40AM. collages... lots and lots. :) my latest venture is the inside of my metal curious george lunch box. woo hoo... :) -cassie

Reply from: morrigan on 8/6/98 at 6:36AM. woo .. i haven't been very crafty lately .. but reading this post has inspired me. :) and i decorate my computer monitor too, nikki .. it's covered with stickers and paintswirls and glitter and Lego minifigs and all sorts of other weird crap that i add on whenever i get bored. heh. i'm the only person that ever sees it, but that's okay!

Reply from: An anonymous viewer on 8/6/98 at 1:48PM. more!

Reply from: KF on 8/6/98 at 2:36PM. ooo a curious george lunch box. :) that's divine.

Reply from: nikki monster on 8/6/98 at 2:44PM. janet, how did you make a day planner? teach me! i have a super old crappy mead one. i guess if i took some heavy duty cardboard and the three-ring part.. covered up the cardboard with material or whatever, that would work. i want to make it pretty, though!

Reply from: PixiGrrrl on 8/6/98 at 2:53PM. I make all kinds of stuff! I make punk-rawk-dyke barbies (gave two to Lori and Sara for "role playing" when they visited Spidee and I!), make Collage/Decopage boxes and journals, used to make stickers, make picture frames out of fuzzy material, and am CONSTANTLY decorating my flat and desk! I'm working on a photo collage/painting and I'm gonna buy me a silkscreener!!!! hee hee heee!

Reply from: Brian Crabtree on 8/6/98 at 6:46PM. whooooaaaaaa silkscreening is soo fun. I took a serigraphy class last semester.

Reply from: janeeta on 8/6/98 at 6:50PM. brian, where the fuck did you find this thread? i looked through all the messages, and i couldn't find it. *confused out the ass*

Reply from: janeeta on 8/6/98 at 6:56PM. uh, actually, for the dayplanner all i did was take one of those half-size 200 page notebooks. i glued pictures and glitter all over the cover, covered that with clear packing tape, then hotglued on some rhinestones. it's *so* glam. then i (and it took fucking forever) wrote the dates and day of the week from now until the end of may. i used one side of a page for one day. it's soooo cute. i always used to do my barbies up all punkie. my favorite one has chopped off hair and it's bright red... and i used a silver paint marker for details here and there. it's neat. maybe i'll go do up ken tonight. my mom bought me a neat-o orange lamp, but the lampshade is plain white. i'm thinking about doing some decoupage on it. wheee! i'm waiting to get back to school so i can buy cheap thrist store furniture and mutilate, er, i mean, rejuvinate it.

Reply from: rose on 8/6/98 at 7:00PM. janeeta- i found the thread to..i sent it to you under the sobbing thread..it's about #43 or so

Reply from: Brian Crabtree on 8/6/98 at 7:03PM. My next project is going to be sealing off my dorm room from *all* outside light... This is going to take lots of black blankets and velcro.. And then installing a pinhole. So that, essentially, I will live inside a really big camera. This will be neat because 1) When I go to sleep I'll be able to look up at my cieling and see very faintly the cars drive by outside, the streetlights, people walking hither and thither... I think it'll be pretty rad. and 2) I'll be able to take pictures by holding a piece of film or paper against my wall... If I make a 1/4" (6mm) "pinhole"... which will be more of a pencilhole, I realize... That's f/666. Which means if I use 4x5 sheet film at 400ASA... When the sun's out I can use an exposure of three seconds. Or, if i shoot a paper negative... um... les'see... about half an hour on RC multicontrast paper with a 00 filter... Neat! Also... the focal length is going to be around FOUR METERS. That's like a 4000mm lens on an 4x5 camera if I shoot 4x5 film. Which is equivalent to a 1000mm lens on a 35mm camera! Whoa. That is *so* telephoto. I could take pictures of people a block away. geez. this is going to be so rad.

Reply from: janeeta on 8/6/98 at 7:05PM. that's not crafty, brian. that's obsessive and psychotic. *poke poke* ;)

Reply from: Brian Crabtree on 8/6/98 at 7:10PM. You won't think so when you're watching the oklahoma sunset in the palm of your hand... (sunrise? which was does kirk 26 face?) It's going to be fucking badass. Plus I'll be in the color class this semester... So I can shoot color film of all this... And I'll be able to dodge and burn on the *film*, because I'll be inside the camera. Whoa.

Reply from: janeeta on 8/6/98 at 7:13PM. i know, B, i know. i was just trying to defend my humble li'l thread against your big techni-speak. *wink*

Reply from: Brian Crabtree on 8/6/98 at 7:17PM. Sorry. mwah

Reply from: janeeta on 8/6/98 at 7:38PM. oh B, you know i was just goofing around, right? *hugs* post all the photo stuff you want. duh. :)

Reply from: celeste on 8/6/98 at 7:44PM. brian, i think that camera room idea is so neat. if i knew more about that kind of stuff, i'd try to do the same thing.

Reply from: Brian Crabtree on 8/6/98 at 9:02PM. Oh god, it's like SO easy. All you need is a dark room with a hole in it, and there you go. That's all a camera is anyway. There are lots of pinhole camera resources on the web, try yahoo. :)

Reply from: devilgirl on 8/6/98 at 9:59PM. Brian's camera idea reminds me of this book i read on the airplane to maryland last may. i bought it at the SF airport for like 2 dollars. it's called "the secrets of the camera obscura" i think....it's quite odd, but it's about a murder that takes place out side a camera like Brian is talking about, and all the investigation, and schtuff..so, anyway....yeah :) heh....bye xoxo carra

Reply from: cera on 8/6/98 at 10:11PM. oh shit! when i was in like 8th grade my little 'excells' class did a maybe month long photography class & we all got to make our own cameras out of like tin cans, ect. it was so neat. then on the last day we got to see what brian was talking about, it was just a little shack, not even 6ft tall, & there was just a little whole on one wall & a curtain on the opposite wall & we could see kids on the outside of one wall diplayed on the other wall, but it was all upside down. uh, did that make sence? anyway, it was really rad, & um... now back to yr regularly scheduled program...

Reply from: gemma on 8/6/98 at 11:06PM. lunchboxes:) i had a pink lunchbox. i went online, found a bazillion melissa york pictures, made a couple of my own, went into photoshop and made a collage that fitted my box, and then letterted and printed it up, glued it on and then added sporty spice and glitter glue. voila! a sparkly melissa york lunch box:) i;m always covering things with art i do... i find it alot more personal than cutting out a picture from somewhere.. unless its a really neato thing. i'm not really good but i like the effort. i also make hair shit. like, i use my mum's handy dandy glue gun and decorate headbands and barrettes.. i have shorter hair so it looks neato... my favorite is my pink headband with tiny pink and white pom pom's and my little pony shoes on it.... unfortuanately i dont have anywhere to wear it right now, so it's resevred for when i wear my pink panties or in the buff:) jewleries and stuff.. i decorate lotsa things i wear when i'm in the mood. i made a really neato seven inch rack for a friend... i found a wire rack for that purpose at the thrift store, and brought it home. she's a micro machiene fiend and so i took little scraps of extra track from my dad's thinger (long stroy.. it's black and rubbery) and affixed it to the outside edges, and then glued her little cars on.... and then used pipe cleaners twisted around the other parts and it was ever so neat:) unfortuanetley the magority of the cars belonged to her brother and he broke the stand retreivin them..... la la.... i also used to decorate my undies back in the days,. xoxo gemma

Reply from: jeff on 8/6/98 at 11:07PM. brain, that sounds reallt rad. i would love to see the results. maybe you could post them after you do this project? its rad i just say this thread cuz today i made my first duct tape wallet!! it was fun, and not as much agrevation as it seemed like it could be. now ill i need to do is decorated it :) oh, and last week i decorated a cheap wall clock i found. i used blue construction paper and a cut out from the movie johnny suede. i think i can honestly say that im the only kid on my block with a baby blue johnny suede clock. hell yeah for DIY!! tea hee

Reply from: jeff on 8/6/98 at 11:12PM. i almost forgot about my record box! this project was super simple and the result came out lookin mighty fine. what i did was i got a 12x12 cardboard box. painted it white and cut out 2" from the front and half the side so i could acsess my records with out touching the lip of the box. i then painted it white and got 3 or 4 shit records, broke them up and aranged the pieces on the sides and glued them on with hot glue. i out lined the pieces with puffy paint and put som stickers on the front, and vua la. it looks a might but nifty.

Reply from: jeff yet agian on 8/6/98 at 11:18PM. oh yeah! i have more. umm one of my favorite projects is my laptop carring case i made. i bought a used clarenet case for 30 buck from a used music store. i took out the foam and pading from the inside, musured up some new foam, bought some red velvet and made a rad ass case for pebbles, my computer. now instead of walking arounf with a dorky laptop case, i have a hard case that is orignal, and it sports a third sex sticker! hehe, plus im not a target for a thief cuz everyone thinks i am just tooling around a clarenet. another thing i made was a cloth case for my CD player. i went to the cloth store and found some cute lepracon fabric and sewed it all up. im gunna put some padding in it as soon as i get a chance. umm, thats all. i swear. hearts

Reply from: janeeta on 8/7/98 at 10:19PM. hmmm.... macaroni necklaces decorate shoeboxes with paint, magazine cutouts, little scraps of stuff you find here and there use clothes you can't or don't wear anymore to make patches, purses, hats, etc. use nail polish to decorate hair clips bake stuff. that can be pretty damn creative. pick flowers and leaves, press and dry them, and then use them to decorate picture frames, notebooks, etc. learn to do origami make jewelry out of string and li'l trinkets you find out in the garage. nuts, washers, and all that hardware stuff makes neat-o tough jewelry. (i have a pair of sneakers with nuts all over the shoelaces. they are so badass) find a recipe for homemade play do and then sculpt stuff. finally, look for bargain bins and sidewalk sales at the craft stores. you can find great stuff for CHEAP!

Reply from: An anonymous viewer on 8/8/98 at 6:24AM. why would you want to melt a seven inch?

Reply from: Brian Crabtree on 8/8/98 at 11:15AM. CD's are even better in the microwave. You should only do it for a few seconds, though. They start smoking pretty bad if you do it too long.

Reply from: tiffini on 8/8/98 at 1:50PM. lately im obsessed with handsewing things to my bookbag,cd case, sweaters ect. last nite i ripped up an old little twin stars wallet and sewed it onto an old bookbag. waahlaa! instant cute. another good idea for getting fabric is going to thrift stores and buying old sheets and curtains. its cheap and usually cooler than the 'spensive kind of fabric. xoxo-tiffini

Reply from: PunkGirlie on 8/8/98 at 2:00PM. i love body glitter but has anyone been noticing that the prices of it are gettin stupid like 6 bucks for a small tube. So i decided to make my own. just buy some really fine glitter from the craft section , mix it with aloe vera gel and mix it together in a little contanier, voila body glitter tons of it for cheap!

Reply from: Max on 8/8/98 at 11:41PM. Brian Crabtree: That is so amazing, about your room as a camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved reading that! How did you figure out what the focal length would be, and how large you need to make the pinhole?? Please tell more. This is fascinating. Max

Reply from: An anonymous viewer on 8/8/98 at 11:54PM. i have a question about making a camera out of a room: where does the "pinhole" go?

Reply from: Brian Crabtree on 8/9/98 at 0:06AM. Sure. The focal length of any lens is the distance from the rear nodal point to the film plane, when the lens is focused on infinity. A pinhole is tiny, so all light must pass through a single point. So the nodal point is the pinhole itself. And since there's no lens to "focus", a pinhole focuses *everywhere*. There's no specific focal length of a pinhole. The "focal length" is just the distance between the pinhole and the film plane. So, if my back wall is 4m from my window (where my pinhole will be), the focal length is 4,000mm. The smaller the pinhole is, the sharper your image will be. Think about it like this... When light comes from a single point in your subject, through a round hole, it will make a circle on the film plane. These circles, all put together, make up the complete image. The size of the circle, of course, depends on the size of the pinhole. But, you can't just make the hole microscopic hoping to get a sharp image, because of diffraction -- the tendency of light to behave as a wave and spread out when it goes through a very small hole. So there actually *is* an optimal pinhole diameter for any given focal length, which will give you the sharpest tradeoff between blur and diffraction. If you're planning to build one, the simplest formula is to take the square root of the focal length and divide by 25 to find the diameter. To find the equivalent f/stop, just divide the focal length by the aperture. My 4,000mm camera with a 2mm pinhole would be f/2000. You can use a light meter and then calculate the exposure time you need. On a sunny day, with Ilford HP5 (which is a 400 speed film, but I rate it at 320), you need an exposure of 1/320 sec at f/16. So... from f/16 to f/2000 is how many stops? For each f/stop, the number increases by 1.414, or the square root of two... For each 2 f/stops the number doubles. So... f/32 is 2 stops more, f/64 is 4, f/128 is 6, f/256 is 8, f/512 is 10, f/1024 is 12, and f/2048 (approx f/2000) is 14 stops from f/16. 14 stops means 2^14 less light. that's one sixteen thousandth. eek. So, 16,000 times 1/320 second = 50 seconds. So you'd need a 50 second exposure. See? except that you have to correct for reciprocity failure because there's so little light, and you actually need an exposure of six minutes (and you'll need to pull your processing by 25%, write me if you want specific formulae for reciprocity failure). If you save this to a file and go grab a calculator, you can use this information to build a camera out of anything... Examples from my experimental photo class last year: a traffic cone, a 35mm film canister (mine), an oatmeal box, a human mouth.

Actually, you should make the hole in aluminum foil for small pinholes, and for larger ones (like the 2mm one for the room camera) you might want to use a piece of a can. It should be perfectly round.
