Reading Festival

28th August 1998

After spending a bit of time curled up in my tent recovering from Rocket From The Crypt I headed towards the signing tent (on my own...I hate my friends) and some how ended up right near the front of the queue. After a few minutes and some shuffling around thanks to a forklift driving some fencey things about, the girls appeared from behind a big gate followed after a while by a slightly unsteady looking Pete. Some bloke gave me two shiny photos and Marie gave me two Get In posters. I told Lauren I had a website about them and she seemed impressed, she told Emmy-Kate and she didn't. Pete shook my hand and said "It's nice to meet one of the five people who care" before shouting at the merchandise man and running off round the back.

Katie's down there somewhere...

Anyway I'm meant to be reviewing the gig which is where the problem lies. Y'see they day before we'd bought a crate of beer each and when it came to consuming it no prisoners were held, so by showtime I was slightly unstable. What I do remember is the first song 'Rama Lama Lama' was very loud, very fast and very short. I know roughly which songs they played but not in any kind of order - Rama Lama Lama, In Your Car, Come Out 2Nite, Stay In the Sun, I Would Fix You, Run Me Over, Weeknights (about Laurens pet squirrel), Lunch At Lassiters, Magnatron (with good dancing) and Phsycic Defence. There might have been more, or less, or different ones I'm not exactly sure. The old songs got the best reaction but the new stuff seemed to go down well. Lauren played guitar on two songs, one of them was Come Out 2Nite. Pete walked about a lot.

There wasn't enough of the old stage banter. And there was someone dressed as old Marie near me. My friend had a go at Marie's dress, I kicked her in the stomach. Some bloke said Emmy-Kate had a face like a horses arse, I gave him a bad look. I'm really bad at this but all I know for sure about the actual gig is that I had a great time and even though I had to walk back to my tent listening to Page and Plant I went to sleep a very happy girl mainly because of Kenickie... and Carlsberg... and Tetleys.
