More Kenickie Singles

In Your Car 1 & 2, Nightlife 1 & 2, PUNKA new 1 & 2

In Your Car (1) Released: 30/12/96 on Emidisc. Highest Chart Position: 24

In Your Car: (Laverne, Du Santiago)
In Your Car was the first 'Nick single to go top 40, to date it is also the highest charting. A fast paced and firey song, well indowed sharp lyrics and a frankly uneccessary number of yeahs, this was also the first Kenickie release I bought, and the last to feature the previously characteristic cartoon sleeve designs. Am I the only one to grieve for their passing?
Private Buchowski:
Good track this. Carried forwards from Catsuit City, this track also made an appearance on the US version of At The Club, meaning that alongside PUNKA, this tune has appeared on more diferent releases than any other effort by the 'Nicks.
Killing Fantasy:
Further adding to the 'Nicks ballsy image, this is a frightening song about the consequences of two-timing Lauren. Violence features prominantly. Be warned.
In Your Car (2) As above
In Your Car: (Laverne, Du Santiago)
Kenickie got to be the first band to perform on TOTP in 1997 when In Your Car charted. This was exciting for me as it was the first time I'd seen them since that evening a year or so before - when I hadn't really been listening and had been at the back anyway - I was not disappointed. The 'Nicks performed with verve and vigour, and I shall never forget that little red number Lauren was wearing, never!
Can I Take U2 The Cinema:
A damn fine song! One of my favorites, only too short. One more verse would have finished it, although I can see why the 'Nicks thought otherwise.
I'm An Agent: (Numan)
An old Gary Numan song. Apart from using guitars, this is a very faithful copy. Also an interesting preparation for Robot Song perhaps... The play out is one of the best sounds to grace my Hi-Fi for ages.
Nightlife (1) Released: 21/4/97 on Emidisc, Highest Chart Position: 27
Nightlife: (Laverne, Du Santiago, Montrose, X)
Not my favorite release, but a good track none the less. The line "We have to see each other's clothes, so we're all freezing." is divine.
Kenix: (Laverne, Du Santiago)
A stormer, this one. In this live track the 'Nicks go announce themselves to the world. They may have opened gigs with this song at one point. Or maybe not - I don't know...
Skateboard Song: (Laverne)
A slightly different version of the song that appeared on 'Catsuit City' under the name of 'SK8BDN SONG.' In my opinion, this is the better version.
Nightlife (2) As above
Nightlife: (Laverne, Du Santiago, Montrose, X)
No change
J.P.: (Laverne)
I'm not too sure about this one myself, but make your own mind up.
Eat the Angel: (Laverne)
It's funny really, how you don't listen to single properly for months after you bought it, and then, when you do, one of the b sides blows your socks off. A couple of days after getting home for christmas, I put this single on, and after the slightly disapointing J.P. came this song. My god it's great! Leaping right up there with all my other favourites, this song is just really classic Kenickie. I just can't believe I didn't realise sooner.
PUNKA re-release (1) Released: 23/6/97 on Emidisc. Highest Chart Position: 38
PUNKA: (Laverne, X)
The song which, after Come Out 2Nite, sent Kenickie ballistic. Here it is repackaged with four new b sides. Although Punka remains the same (if it ain't broke, don't fix it? Perhaps?), the b sides are worth every penny, I assure you. The 'Nicks were not happy about this track being released, prefering some newer material... I for one agreed with them here, for what ever difference my opinions make now. However, EMIdisc got their way and were suitably punished in the charts.
Lights Out in a Provincial Town: (X)
Probably cursed with the longest Kenickie song title in history, this is, nonetheless, one of their finest songs. Without doubt.
Waste You: (Laverne)
Another expression of true class, this is one of the most heart rending songs I have ever heard, ever.
PUNKA re-release (2) As above
PUNKA: (Laverne, X)
Frankly, a disappointing performance in the shops saw this version struggle to make the top forty. This is your fault not mine. Yes YOU, you out there who didn't buy either copy! Why not? What's your excuse, 'cause I'm telling you it better be good.
We Can Dream: (Laverne, Du Santiago, X)
Speaking of heart rending songs, here's another one, even more so than the last. Although I consider Waste you the superior song, this is the one that got me crying when my last girlfriend left me (I was pissed at the time, honest!)
Brighter Shade of Blue: (Laverne, Du Santiago)
A return to the faster, noisier side of the 'Nicks here, and a welcome one. If the new album is even half as good as these four b sides, Then it will conquer the world!
