Chosen Careers

I'm certainly glad that Queen, collectively and individually, didn't take up
their "Chosen" careers.

Can you imagine ........

Going into the Dentists and Mr Meddows-Taylor (for by now he will have
chosen the extended mix of his surname) and asking him to look at some
problem or other. He'd be listening to Radio Two (our MOR station here in
the UK), drinking decaffeinated coffee with Rich Tea biscuits, be
immaculately turned out, with half-moon glasses (so some things never change
do they?). His passion for fast cars and boats is a throwback to a wild
fling with a musical troupe in his surrogate home in Cornwall where he could
indulge himself in such things.

For non-UK readers it may be even harder to imagine Brian as a latter day
Patrick Moore. He would have taken up his residence at Jodrell Bank, be a
minor TV cult star with his own early hours show about studying for Quasars.
Instead of taking up the Red Special, he would have bought an antique
(probably Victorian) fireplace and have restored it to its former glory as a
fireplace. His trademark permed locks would be short, a bit thinning and
combed back. His doctorate paper on "Its Life James, but not as we know
it!" will have outsold Stephen Hawkings'. His musical tastes range from
obscure Norwegian opera stars (Sissel) to George Formby (for his Ukulele
playing).

Frederick Bulsara has become an established art and fashion critic with the
Sun. His sense of extravagance, gained in years as an art student at
Ealing, has never left him. The career in 'commercial art' that he had
planned never really took off, he was too much of a rebel. His circle of
"Bohemian" friends are notorious for their night time exploits around the
clubs in London and Munich and he has a summer home in Ibiza (Kismet!!!!!).
Frederick has embraced the religion of his childhood and is happily married
with eight children. His Dentist, coincidentally, is a Mr Meddows-Taylor,
who's practice in Harley Street, is the haunt of many international
celebrities.  Musically, Frederick, has a broad and catholic taste;
primarily his thoughts turn to light operetta such as Gilbert and Sullivan
but it spans the whole spectrum from, what was, Punk to folk-rock, he even
has a penchant for Leonard Cohen (his rockier stuff, of course!). Frederick
has never learned to drive, preferring to use the services of others. In
his spare time he writes music for others too and is planning a piece
containing high camp, rock and opera as well as black humour. It is
rumoured that it will go under the title "Rhapsody for mamma".

Mr Deacon has become an electrical engineer in Leicester with GEC. He is a
professional father whose eleven sons are all at some varying stage of a
career with Leicester City Football Club. A quiet man, John does not
proffer much by the way of information about himself but it is known that a
prototype amplification system known as the "Deakie Amp" has been trailed by
Sir John Elton (the infamous rock pianist) for use on his world mega tour.
An archetypal engineer, John has written a book about the use of transistors
in the development of ultra-sound scanning equipment to enable the sex of
children to be gauged prior to birth. His earlier wish to be a
gynaecologist has been partially fulfilled as he delivered the last eight of
his children himself.

But above all I'm glad that Queen are, were and will be.
