Something For Kate

1997 Beat Magazine Edition #553 (Melbourne), #128 (Sydney):
Not only can Something For Kate fans enjoy a high quantity of releases from the band, they can’t quibble with the quality either.  Not so much improving (why fix what…) but refining, this follows the wonderful and cruelly ignored Dean Martin into your heart.  Chiming guitars, the chorus radio have been waiting for and nice aviation metaphors in the lyrics.  Also the first taste of their Brian Paulson (Slint) produced debut album, this is the best they’ve ever sounded, sonically.  Top b-sides as ever, an acoustic Subject To Change (Paul Dempsey is currently doing plenty o’solo shows) and the instrumental departure Floatation.  Bring on the album.

On Dit:
S4K, in their infinite brilliance, have no trouble translating their love of model plane building into pure pop inspiration.  This bristles with the trademark angst that has made their previous releases such compelling listening.  What’s more, I bet they’ve got ever better songs up their sleeves.

Form Guide – June Issue:
With many Something For Kate fans eagerly awaiting the release of their full length debut in June, this single is very timely.  The band haven been playing The Captain Song for some time now live – renaming it for the single.  The B-sides are great songs as well – Subjected to change being Paul doing a solo version of Subject to change, the first track off ....The Answer to Both Your Questions EP, and Floatation is a great, intricate instrumental, showing the band’s love of the seminal music coming out of the US.  However – and here’s the great part – if you buy the single at Augogo (that’s in Melbourne – elsewhere I’m not sure), you get a fourth track free!  Chapel St. etc. is a really cool track.  It’s great Something For Kate as they are liked and loved.
