The Backstreet Boys Band Together

Just when you thought Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean, Kevin Richardson and Howie Dorough had it all-good looks, awesome dance moves, amazing vocals and oodles of charm-they pulled another trick out of their multi-talented hats this past summer. For those of you who were lucky enough to catch the five guys on their summer tour promoting their 1997 self-titled album, you probably saw them do something they don't usually do on stage-play instruments!

Howie tells BB that singing is first and foremost on the Backstreet Boys' career agenda, but playing instruments is something in which they're all interested. "We dabble around with them," the 25-year-old songster says of their recent turn with the musical instruments. "In the last couple of tours, A.J. and Nick were playing the drums and the piano on our European tours. And now we kind of all picked up the instruments."

In case you missed their show, here's the breakdown on who plays what now that all the guys are in on the music-making fun: Nick keeps the rhythm on drums, A.J. gets down on bass, Howie gets busy on electric guitar, Kevin tickles the ivories on keyboard and Brian brings in the funk on percussions(and, in a rare summer tour treat, on guitar!)

Some may wonder if the Boys' sudden intrest in playing music means that the Backstreet Boys are changing their image from singing and dancing extraordinaires to musicians. King of the dance floor A.J. says he doesn't see that happening. "It's not about our image," A.J., 21, explains. "It's more or less the music that we want people to fall in love with."

Considering that the Backstreet Boys had time to master instruments while they've been so busy touring and making an album, these guys must be more gifted than anyone would've guessed! Yet Kevin, 27, says he already had the skills."I've been playing piano since I was 9," he modestly shares.

Nick adds that playing musical instruments wasn't new to him either. "I've been playing the drums for almost four years now," the golden-blond 18-year-old reveals.

Whether the Backstreet Boys decide to include more music playing in the shows or not, there's no doubt that when they hit the stage they can do not wrong. "I think when we all get together we gel," says 23-year-old cutie Brian. "We compliment each other."

So don't worry, the Backstreet Boys wouldn't dare give up their slick choreograpy for rockin' out with instruments for an entire show. "We're not trying to be Hansons or anything," Howie adds. "We just, you know, add a little spice to life."
