Fax/Much Music Interviews with Gavin Rossdale, July 10/97.
outside the Molson Ampitheatre in Toronto.
First interview:
KR=Kathleen Rajsp(interviewer)
KR- Why did you do so many dates in Canada?
Gavin- Uh, I guess because...um, we thought we could, and it turned out
we could. It's just the fact, uhhh...people didn't seem to go out to
some certain places and it's a bit...you know, it always just felt a bit
weird. We, you know, we have a lot of support in this country and
therefore you want to go out and play to as many people as possible.
KR- But you've spent a fair amount of time here in Canada...
G- Oh yeah!
KR- between touring here and the press conference...
G- Sure, yeah, yeah...
KR- I mean you're almost a Canadian citizen!
G- Yes, I know I know I know...Three more days and I get to pay tax here
I think!
KR- (laughs) Why do you think it is that people in *this* country are so
hot for your band?
G- Ummm, uh...lyrics and music...and uh, pelvic movement.
(clip from concert)
G- Sure, there'll be a third record...uhh, that's if our record company
picks up the next option.
(screaming crowd)
KR- Well, I guess I'll leave you to your fans.
G- (joking) Oh no!
KR- Well, nice talking to you again.
G- Yes, nice talking to you too (waving and smiling) Bye Canada!
Goodbye! See you again soon!
Second (part of) Interview
KR- Do you ever feel though that you're so successful, people try to
find a reason not to like you?
G- (taking pictures of David Yow) Oh, dig it...yeah, totally.
KR- Yeah.
G- Of course, and I think...you know, the weird part is, it's not our
fault is it?
KR- No, no...
G- You know, you just go to make a record and if people like you and you
do good with it, well...so that's always been a huge ironic twist.
KR- Do you think it's just the success or is it something else why....I
mean, there are quite a few successful bands but you seem to take a lot
of flak.
G- Yeah.
KR- Why do you think that is?
G- Yeah...I guess there haven't been....I don't know how many bands
over the last four years that maybe have done as many things as we've
done without...I want to emphasize this point that....without the help
of any press. You know, it's all been about exposure of the material,
whether through videos, through radio and through playing, in no
specific order, that is (smiles)
(concert clip)
G- The problem is we're so successful now that....that ummm, everyone
has an opinion, and you can't please everyone. And at least...I'd *much*
rather have people love us or hate us...indifference is a real insult.
So, we don't....we haven't yet experienced indifference.
END.
