"Let's Get Rocked"
The first song released was the last completed-it was arranged and recorded in less than two weeks. "It sounds like Def Lepard, but it's got a Prince-like approach to the verse, that kind of meter and arrangement," notes Joe, who thinks it's the perfect album kickoff song. "It's not going to win Grammy nominations, but it's fun."
"Heaven Is"
"This on takes a light approach. If we did ten songs like 'White Lightening,' it would be depressing,' says Joe.
"Make Love Like A Man"
"It's really tongue in cheek," says Phil of this track. "When I first suggested it to Mutt and Joe, I said, "We'll change the lyrics later on,' and they were, 'No, no, no, that sounds great-we can't change it.' So we left it like that. It's not meant to be serious, and it's not about any of us," he adds.
"Tonight"
This ballad had its beginnings back in 1984-it finally got worked into good enough shape to make Adrenalize, and was one of the first songs recorded for it.
"White Lightning"
The phrase has a double meaning: it's slang for cocaine, and it's a nickname for the late Steve Clark that arose from the way the blond, white-clad axeman streaked across the stage. Phil wrote the music for this on the last Lep tour, and developed it with Sav and Joe. Then Steve's death provided the inspiration for the lyrics. "It's about someone with the same problem as Steve, someone's personal hell. They can't do anything about it even it they tried," Phil describes. According to Joe, the song was re-worked several times, and finally came together when he sent a tape of it to Mutt Lange: "he rearranged my lyrics and came up with a bridge part. It's inspired by Steve but not about him-it could be about anybody that's on the way out," he adds. "But it might not have gotten written if he hadn't died."
"Stand Up (Kick Love Into Motion)"
This tune was born during the mixdown of Hysteria, when Phil and Steve were jamming to bide the time.
"Personal Property"
This song, which came out of a sound check in Japan, takes "a very '90s attitude towards a relationship," says Joe. "It's a very monogamous relationship. It's related to the times, the AIDS thing, not that we're preachers by any means. The statement is, "Hands off-she's mine."
"Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad"
Joe believes everyone will relate to this song, responding to the titular refrain, "Yeah, I have." He notes, "The frustration thing always works well in lyrics."
"I Wanna Touch You"
According to Joe, "The most poppy thing we've ever done."
"Tear It Down"
The b-side of Hysteria's "Women" single, this song was championed by fans, especially after Lep played it on the MTV Awards. "We just thought, why not? Why shouldn't we put it on there and give everyone a chance to listen to it?," Rick A. explains it presence.
