E.Y.C. - Express Yourself Clearly!
(Article appeared in the Australian "Smash Hits" Magazine, February 2, 1994)

That's what EYC stands for - and they're the band that everyone's predicting big things for in '94. They're also here in Oz as we speak and MARC-E-MARC ANDREWS caught up with David from the band as he expressed himself, um, clearly.

"To be honest I like the attention, but I feel this is a group thing and everyone's got their part to play and I just try to do what I do." So says David Loeffler, lead hunky bloke from hot new American band E.Y.C., currently crisscrossing the country, and whose debut single, "Feelin' Alright", is out "as we speak". But although E.Y.C haven't set the charts on fire just yet, they have set more than a few hearts aflame throughout the world.

"We did some radio interviews in England," Dave recalls, "and the girls broke into the radio station and jumped in on us. It's crazy, but it's fun and at the same time it's scary. And there's always a bunch of girls outside the hotels and stuff. You try to be nice and appreciate them being there for you, but it's difficult at times because you're always busy and you don't always have time to sit with them and they get mad at you." Ah, the trappings of stardom. Thankfully, it doesn't look like the lads(Damon Butler, Trey Parker and Dave) are all that far away from hitting the big time, especially when you consider some the mega-famous names they've been touring the world with recently.

"We did a Prince tour in Europe for two weeks," Dave tells, "and went home and then we got offered the Whitney Houston tour in England and the UK and we had to go for it." So did you get to meet Prince?

"No, he don't talk to no one. It takes him about 80 people to get to the stage. But at our third show he came out and sat on the side of the stage and watched our show, so that was very flattering." And what about Whitney?

"We met everyone but Whitney. But Bobby Brown was so cool. He came up to us and said 'Whitney hasn't had a chance to talk to you guys, she's been so busy with the baby and stuff!' And it's like, when we go on she's arriving and when we come off we go on to our next show."

Shucks. What's more the lads were also supposed to be supporting Michael Jackson on his Aussie tour, but that, of course, didn't happen. Double shucks. So how exactly did this rather happenin' new band, um, happen then? David has his E.Y.C history books at the ready.

"About six years ago Trey and Damon got together - they were singing and dancing together - and about four years ago I had a group and we had met one another and we started hanging out and having a good time and finally, we became a group. Then we went to Japan and did a Teen Idol Fest there and raised money to come home and do a home video for our first song and that got us signed and we went through a lot of record companies trying to rip us off and make us into something that we're not, and then we finally go an offer from someone who wanted us to be ourselves and our dreams came true." How sweet. And how would you describe the other guys in the band then?

"Trey is the all-American guy from Alabama, blond-hair and blue-eyed, and very loveable," he titters. "And Damon doesn't have an enemy in the world, he's the coolest, he's got his own vibe and won't argue with anyone, whereas I'm always arguing and fighting over something. We all bring something into the group." Glad to hear it, Dave. So what can we expect from E.Y.C here in Oz then?

"We're gonna knock Australia out." Sounds nasty.

"Hahaha. No we've got a lot of stuff lined up. We're spending a month in Australia having fun in the sun and we can't wait. We want to get some Australian people going wild. We love to perform live, that's our big thing. We give you lots of hype dance stuff and we slow it down with some pretty songs and we got some nice sexual songs where I take my shirt off and everyone screams. I'm the bad boy of the group, hahaha." Indeed.(?) So, finally, Dave tell us just what this E.Y.C business is about then?

"E.Y.C stands for Express Yourself Clearly. We want to get out message across that it's about individuality, about being yourself, about being a leader and not a follower. Do what you like to do and you've got to do that by doing what you want to do and you'll be a much happier person."
