Savage Day - Pt 4
“Darren, have you ever felt like, ‘you wanted it so much, and now that it’s over, you don’t know what you want’?”
“Gee Dan, that’s really good! I’ve never seen this side of you before. Where did you get it from?” Darren was astonished.
“Oh, I was just thinking about the beer I had this morning.”
“Oh. Well, that explains it.”
Darren sighed and lay down on his back, resting with his arms beneath his head.
“Any time I need to see your face I just close my eyes...” he mumbled.
“Huh??”
“Just some dream I had last night” Darren explained. “Some girl came to see me wondering if I had a pilot’s certificate. And she said to me: “Why don’t we fly to the moon and back?”
“What a loonie!” Dan laughed.
“Yeah...” Darren laughed too, although he had a contemplative look on his face. “She seemed really bitter though, for some reason...”
Dan moaned.
“Who cares about your stupid dreams anyway?! I’m gonna go get some ice cream” he said and was already on his way to the ice-cream stall.
When they’d gotten their orders and started eating Darren noticed that Daniel was hiding something behind his back.
“What have you got there, Dan?” he wondered.
“Oh, nothing...” Dan answered with an innocent look on his face.
“C’mon Daniel, I see the truth inside your eyes! Show me!”
Very slowly Dan reached out his hand, holding a chocolate bar in it.
Darren gasped.
“Chocolate!! GIMME SOME!!!” he shouted and made an attempt to snatch it from Daniel, who quickly hid it behind his back again.
“NO Daz, it’s mine!”
“Remember - you get back ten times what you give freely, like my mamma told me...” Darren whined, pouted with his lower lip and turned his back on Daniel.
Dan looked at Darren, then at the piece of chocolate, and finally at Darren again. He sighed.
“All right, you win” he said, split it in half and gave one piece to Daz, who greedily shoved it into his mouth.
“Thanksch Dan, thisch wasch really good!” he mumbled with a big, happy smile.
“It better be...” Dan muttered.
A woman walked by, wearing a pearl necklace and looking like a real snob with her nose high up in the air.Darren snorted at the sight of her.
“They think they’re so pompous!” he said. “But I’ll bet my Star Wars figures she’s got all these mixed emotions she keeps locked away from all the world.”
“You don’t have any Star Wars figures, remember? You sold them ages ago” Dan said.
“I know that very well, thank you” Darren said with a painful look in his eyes. “Don’t go make it harder than hell...” He let out a quiet sob.
Dan turned up his eyes and started walking in direction of the beach.
Darren hurried after him and stopped in front of him.
“What’s the matter, Daniel? Was it something I said?”
Daniel had an irresolute look in his eyes.
“No, it’s just that... I don’t know, Darren, I mean, are we really sure of what we’re getting ourselves into? You know, with all the attention that comes with being famous and all. Are you sure we can handle it?”
“Oh, that’s the smallest of our problems!” Darren said to him. “I don’t have a shadow of a doubt that we’re gonna get big some day, Dan, and I can promise you that we’ll love it, both of us!”
“I hope your right...” Dan said.
Darren looked up in the afternoon sky, put on a cheery smile and started walking beside Daniel.
“Don’t you worry,” he said, “I’ll show you the way to the promised land.”
