Message at East: Embrace Change

by Larry Wilson (Star-Gazette, Corning Bureau)

The following is a local newspaper article from the Star-Gazette, printed Saturday, June 24, 1995--the day after my graduation from Corning East High School.

CORNING- As Nancy Scott waited for her only son to graduate from Corning-Painted Post East High School Friday night, she reflected on the 18 years that preceeded the ceremony.

"It's scary," she said. "I never thought we'd get this far some days when he was younger."

But this far David Alan Scott Jr. did. He recieved the 127th of 178 diplomas awarded Friday at War Memorial Stadium to East High's 32nd graduating class.

It was the second time Nancy Scott, a licensed practical nurse at Corning Hospital, had watched a child graduate from high school. David's older sister, Amy, got her diploma in 1991.

David will be off to Corning Community College in the fall to study liberal arts. After that, his mother hopes he'll enroll in Philidelphia College of Art.

Does the graduation of a child make Nancy feel old?

"It certainly does," she said. "Especially when I get back to work full time to help put him through college."

The article went on to mention statements made by the salutatorian, the valedictorian, the principal, and one of several 1995 graduates that treated me like crap during my years at EHS and can go to Hell for it, thank-you-very-much. :-)
After my graduation from East High, I went on to Corning Community College the following school year.
Though information on the Philidelphia art college had been sent to me through the mail (circa 1995-1996), I did not apply to it. Instead, I applied for transfer to various SUNY colleges during my 1997-1998 year at CCC.
