The Voice

by David Alan Scott Jr.
August 13, 1994

The ladder I climb getting higher and higher
The bulb in my head getting duller and duller
The mountain I climb getting steeper and steeper
The thoughts in my head going deeper and deeper
The words on my paper keep growing and growing
The pen in my hand keeps on going and going
The bells in my head, they keep ringing and ringing
And somewhere outside, I hear somebody singing
I follow the sound that grows louder and louder
I follow the scent that grows sweeter and sweeter
I follow the trail that gets longer and longer
With each step I take, I grow stronger and stronger
With each passing day, I grow more and more close
With each passing day, I get more and more done
With each passing day, I can see more and more
I follow the voice as I swim from the shore
My face in the sea, I keep swimming and swimming
My head in the clouds, I keep flying and flying
With each time I fail, I keep trying and trying
With tears in my eyes, I keep crying and crying
The challenge at hand getting tougher and tougher
The quest for the voice brings me more and more pain
With love in my heart, I'll keep searching and searching
And if, should I lose Her, I'll find her again.

HISTORY: A home-alone summer poem, and a long one at that. It's monotony in word repitition should give the reader a feel for how much of a struggle the writer is having here.
Notice the capitalization of "her" on the last line, one of my many poems in which a woman is presented as superior.
