SSML-112, 21 April 2000

Hi all,

Sorry for the extreme lateness is getting these 2 issues of the SS mailing list out (yes, that's right, there is such a backlog that 2 issues are being sent out, one today, and one tomorrow). I have various excuses, but the main ones have to do with working 6 days a week, and moving house in the interim :-)

 Enjoy,
    Mike.

Subject: [marcella] Spitz Club Gig - A review

Hi there !

I thought I would give a quick review of Marcy's gig last Tuesday at the
Spitz Club in London. I should have done this a few days ago but everything
is still kind of fresh in my mind.

I actually had a major trauma in getting to the venue on time. I had
intended to get there for 8.30 p.m but after being misdirected I arrived at
the Spitz, breathless, at 9.00. I was lucky, because Marcy hadn't started by
then and I could feel the expectation in the crowd waiting for her. The club
was sold out, not bad going for a tuesday night and the amount of publicity
given for the event. I managed to bundle through the heaps of people to get
closer to the stage.

Ten minutes later to a rapturous reception Marcy entered triumphantly - with
sparkly trousers ( maybe flares ) looking very hip. Her hairstyle has
changed from when I last saw her in Oxford. Only a few years ago it had been
cut boyishly and had a sexy tint. This time she had luscious curls and just
looked fabulous. As she got on the podium she said 'Don't worry, I'm not
your mother !'. Marcy is a great performer and knows how to immediately make
contact with an audience.

Her first single was 'I Believe' - always a good crowd pleaser. The final
part of the song features her signature 'scream' which really wowwed the
audience and for some, who were seeing Marcy for the first time, simply
startled them ! I looked around and could see some people with their mouths
dropped open - it is a truly amazing voice.
After 'I Believe' it was, generally, a whole new bunch of songs. Marcy
always does a balanced gig but does focus on her new stuff - which I think
*is* good. The best songs ( in my humble opinion ) were 'Closer' and
'Speed'. The reaction for 'Closer' brought the house down ! It is one of the
most magnetic and sensuous songs I have ever heard. Another song ( I don't
the name of, but have seen it on the web ) which has the lyric 'I have a
lust for life' really got the crowd going. After quite a few new songs,
Marcy had finished, but with a universal encore was dragged back to perform
some more songs.

Without the backing band she performed 'Stay' and her version of 'Lay down
Sally'. In fact as soon as she started 'Stay' there was applause, it is
instantly recognisable despite the number of years since it was released.
It's at moments like these it becomes obvious that Marcy is technically
superior to a number of contemporary pop acts. It was just Marcy, her guitar
( emblazoned with the 'Detroit' signature along the strap ) and a
microphone.. and the result was stunning.

Somebody called out for 'Boy' - still a firm favourite, but unfortunately
her new band didn't know it so couldn't give the backing on a quite powerful
song. I would have liked to have seen a couple of songs from 'Feeler',
notably 'Gasoline' and 'Flower', but I think from Marcy's point of view its
important to move on and it must be stimulating to perform your new stuff.

And then it was all over. I crowded round the door with other fans clutching
various albums to get a signed copy. I met some people who had come from
Belgium and Portugal - they had come especially for Marcy - an 8 hour trip
and everything. Fans like these put me in the shade, seeing as I had only
travelled from Oxford about, 80 miles away. Finally Marcy came out to meet
her fans and her friends.
I think the gig had taken a lot out of her and she floated around just
chatting her and there. I managed to get a couple of questions in mainly
about forthcoming gigs. Unfortunately she doesn't plan to be back in the UK
this year and so if I want to see her again in 2000 it looks like a plane
trip to the states ! The other thing to mention is that before she left on
Friday she was going to do a set piece for television. It was a show which
was scheduled for prime time tv. and was to be broadcast later this year on
a saturday night - so this could be very good publicity. I have a couple of
other details on this but I will leave it for Lance to mention this on the
marcella detroit website - assuming my information is correct and I didn't
get the wrong end of the stick !
I did managed to get a signed Jewel and half hugged Marcy. She seemed a
little dazed by me and the general attention, so I apologised and left
hurriedly ! It was a wonderful night, and I would urge anybody and everybody
to check out Marcy live. It adds so many dimensions to what you have already
seen and heard.
Hopefully I haven't been too sycophantic; however when life can seem so
ordinary, the extraordinary needs to be celebrated.

Harry.

Subject: [siobhan/marcella] albums deleted by London

Hey everyone, yet again i have to say sorry for posting this to both
groups but this is urgent!
I have just read that London has decided to delete Marcy's album Jewel
in the UK and US and Hormonally Yours and Sacred Heart in the US (but
they are to be reissued with new Warner Bros numbers in the UK)!
They are already no longer available on CDNow or CDParadise, but
Hormonally Yours has now shown up with it's new catalogue (<-- british
spelling!!) number on CDParadise.
This means that if people haven't got them already, it will be very hard
to get a copy of any of these albums...
This is why the girl's new albums *must* be released soon or their names
will be deleted from the suppliers catalogues altogether!
Yet more bad news, I have recently had an e-mail from the record company
bloke who said he would be interested in releasing the third ss album
saying that Warner Bros. have turned down their application for
licensing the record!
Has anyone got any good news? I'm about to slit my wrists! (joke!)
Regards,
John.
p.s. - Nicolas - this message was sent to the ss and marcy mailing lists
and isn't directly related to you, i'll email you personally later!

Thanks for keeping us posted, yet I am sorry to hear
that it is more bad news. Maybe now would be a good
time to re-address the notion of people from the
mailing list meeting up, to keep spirits high etc.
Also we may come up with an astounding plan of

Thanks anyway,

Hi there!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where could it be possible to catch
hold of a copy of the 3" issue of You're History that Shakespears released
in Japan back in 1989. I know it's quite an ellusive item.

Has anybody had the chance to get a copy of the live Marcy concert "Without

that should be willing to help me in this particular subject should get a
reward.

Any news from Shub?

Finally, i also have 'Pinned', the short Dublin film
in which Siobhan played a recovering junkie....very

the C.D is bloody disgraceful! It is not our album to
make money from in the first place, so why such a
heady price price?

People are definatley missing the point of the group.
Stefan I agree with you that we are supposed to share
the limited resources that we have amongsts ourselves
BECAUSE we are all, more or less, in the same
position. None of us can go into a record shop and
buy this album, and it looks like there will never be
another, so the third and final album must be enjoyed,
not used to make money from.

Hi Liam and everyone,
As i think you all know, Warner refused the original application for
licensing the rights to the record. I have contacted Siobhan about this and
it was suggested that London might be more interested if the cd was only
pressed in the uk (i.e then they could license it to someone else outside of
britain and make more money!), if you live outside of the uk you would have
to import it (i.e. pay a little extra p&p). Also, mp3s would be downloadable
from CDNow, their music downloads cost $1.99 a song, which is just a little
more expensive than buying the actual record by my reckoning.
I'll try to keep you informed about what is happening between myself,
siobhan, and london records but i can promise anything, i dont have a lot of
time at the moment!
The form to email siobhan has been up and down like a yo-yo recently, but if
your message failed to get sent before, try again now, i think its all
sorted!
John.
