SSML-123, 29 October 2000

Hi all,

Quite a few people have asked about certain Marcella releases this time, so I've finally been goaded into doing a bit of an update of the Marcy discography site, whic now includes the cover of the elusive 2nd CD for "Ain't Thing Like The Real Thing", and a CD produced by Marcy for some of her competition winners.

You can check it out at:

http://www.netspace.net.au/~mdevery/mdetroit.html

 Cheers,
   Mike.

Does anybody know what Siobhan is singing in the "Suddenly" chorus?
There's a part I can't make out:

Suddenly
We were more than an accident
Magically
????????????????
Surgically
Way beyond separation, etc?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Yep!
She sings, "magically we were Peters and Lee".
referring to an English pop duo from the 1950's/60's!

Hello!

My name is Charles and I'm from New Orleans, Louisiana...Yes, the city of sin
itself. I've been obsessed with Siobhan since 1983 when Bananarama hit the
U.S. with "Na Na Hey Hey"... The 'Ramas had only 3 hits in the US, but they
were big ones... "Venus," "I Heard A Rumor" & "Cruel summer". My fav lp of
theirs was the self titled 2nd release. Siobhan always had the best
personality & style, but I always found Keren the sexiest one in the trio. I
saw recent footage of the girls and WOW! Sarah looks incredible! Keren was
equally hot..

I can't explain why Siobhan's transformation into Shakespears Sister has been
so important to me, but she ranks high among icons of mine like Siouxsie...
My fav SS track is the original version of "Good Bye Cruel World"... My wife
and I can't get enough of that video!

So, anything new on our "Amanda Donahue look-a-like???

Although I feel badly for your ordeal, I'm so pleased I've heard this from
someone else, as well. I contacted him to purchase some of his SS items,
including the HORMONALLY YOURS CD longbox from USA, and, after two or three
exchanges of info, he never replied again.

As for Marcy's 'original' solo album, are you referring to JEWEL? That's
rather easy to find. Her other solo albums can be purchased directly from
her website, www.marcelladetroit.com. [<~Nick~>]

No, there's an earlier one she did way back when, under the name Marcy Levy,
her original stage name. I've never even seen it on vinyl, just heard of it.
It was called Marcella, and was released in 1982 on the Epic label. Here's
the tracklisting:

Close To Her (released as a single)
First Invasion
All My Love
Waiting On You
Life Is On The Vine
I Can't Stand It
Got To Know You
I Can't Wait That Long
To You

Subject: [marcella] Marcy's chart history

Hi you all!

I know something which might be interesting for you: Marcy's US/UK
chart history (although incomplete):

As Marcy Levy:

Help Me (with Robin Gibb): Peaked in the US at #50, first charted
8/11/1980, peaked after 5 weeks and stayed a total of 10 weeks
charted.

UK:

I Believe: I found that it reached #9, but the source where I got this
from isn't very reliable, so don't you trust me

Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing (with Elton John): Released in May
1994, it reached #24, and stayed 4 weeks charted

I'm No Angel: Got no idea.

Jewel: Got no idea, but it went gold.

Perfect World: First charted 18/3/1995, and only managed to peak at
its debut #134, and only stayed 2 weeks on the top 200, mainly because
lack of promotion from London Records, wasn't it?

I Hate You Now: First charted 6/7/1996, peaked at #107 and only stayed
1 week on the top 200.

Boy: First charted 14/12/1996, peaked at #102 after 1 week and stayed
a total of 2 weeks on the top 200. Bizarre, because it wasn't
promoted, was it? And managed to get a higher place than I Hate You
Now, which was (although very little).

Somebody's Mother, Flower & Feeler: Didn't chart.

So, that's all. Not very good, eh? I think if London records had had
bigger faith in her she would have been a biggest star & hitmaker.
But, still, it shows how wated was Marcy in SS. She never had an
opportunity to shine, and the only one she had (Stay), led to the
break up of the group.. Really, some of her songs are very good, take
I Believe (my fav), or Boy, and one of her new ones, If, which I think
should be released as a single, it's so good.

Marcy's got a kind of voice similar to the girl in Roxette: very high,
which goes perfectly for ballads, and she has done very good ones,
like I Believe, Stay and If.

Cheers,

Cristian

I am pretty sure 'I Believe' got to No. 11 although it may have made it to
No. 9 on the 'Chart Show' - an old UK music programme.

'I'm No Angel' did get into the Top 40, somewhere in the 30s.

There was a lack of promotion. It seems to be recurrent through Marcy's solo
career. People are not ready to show a little faith or take the chance - if
they did they'd make riches ! I am often staggered by the fact that songs
like 'Closer' and 'Speed' are so excellent and yet they are not being picked
up by DJs/promoters. I really wish I could do something !

On another point I don't think 'Jewel''s songs show Marcy at her best.
Marcy has mentioned in the past having a producer she didn't get on with.
The contrast between Feeler and Jewel is very big - and certainly for me it
is a better album. I still like Jewel but without a doubt I play feeler much
more.

**** Nearly - it reached no.11, just outside the top ten but stayed in the
charts for several weeks.

I'm No Angel: Got no idea.

**** I recall it made the top 40, but it was positioned in the late 30's for
just a week

Perfect World: First charted 18/3/1995, and only managed to peak at
its debut #134, and only stayed 2 weeks on the top 200, mainly because
lack of promotion from London Records, wasn't it?

**** Actually 'Perfect World' was heavily publicised in the UK. at that time.
Marci appeared in at least 3 UK TV shows that I know of (a Saturday morning
children's show, Lily Savage's late-night show and game-show 'Talking
Telephone Numbers', as well as her video being shown on the ITV chart show.

Boy: First charted 14/12/1996, peaked at #102 after 1 week and stayed
a total of 2 weeks on the top 200. Bizarre, because it wasn't
promoted, was it? And managed to get a higher place than I Hate You
Now, which was (although very little).

**** This one I can't understand myself. 'Boy' was a great song, Marci was
on the UK's premier music show 'TFI Friday' singing it and it made the Radio
One 'b' play-list which meant it was one of their favourite songs played
often on the UK's best known radio station.

 Somebody's Mother, Flower & Feeler: Didn't chart.

**** I'm a BIG Marci fan but didn't even know 'Somebody's Mother' was
released, never mind get hold of it back then!

So, that's all. Not very good, eh? I think if London records had had
bigger faith in her she would have been a biggest star & hitmaker.

<><> London Records aren't totally to blame here. Marci released her first 4
singles under their management did not too badly with them. She even hooked
up with Elton John! Everything from 'I Hate You Now' was released under AAA
Records - which was (I think) her own record company?? and these singles
received next to no publicity.

Best,
Jon

the first single though? That was the weakest song on the album I thought..
'Boy' should have been the first track then 'Kid', which was one of the best
songs on 'Feeler'.

There seemed to be no organisation with the release of 'Feeler' , for example
'Boy' being on the b side of 'I Hate You Now' then released as the next
single!... Er?

Anyway, I hope the future turns out better for Marci - she certainly deserves
success - she's such a great singer/songwriter :)

This is a US 2-track promo CD (no picture sleeve). It seems "Out of my
mind" was released to radio in the US, as the follow-up to "I Believe"
(itself only released as a 2-track promo in the US, with no commercial
released). I'll add a scan of the CD to my Marcy discog. in the next few

Well hopefully she has got the message loud and clear that Closer and Speed
are well loved songs and should be promoted like anything.

It's always difficult to pick hit songs; I know lots liked Boy but I
actually preferred Flower. The latter was released but with absolutely no
promotion. Everyone has a different like - and then at the end of the day
are Marcy's fans tastes the taste of the UK/US public ? It always makes me
feel glum. The saving grace is that we can all enjoy her music still ! Thank
goodness for the internet !

I have been thinking it would be fun to see marcy live in the US as I know
she sometimes does gigs in her neck of the woods. It would be great to see

Strange, Marcella would surely have had success with her "Out of my mind" song, if it had been released. Well, I wish it were more than just american promo.... I bought "Out of my mind/ detroit" for 20$, hoping that it was more than just a promo CD..... :(((

Really? Well, she would promote it, but I thought that London records
didn't distribute a lot of copies from the single, and was very hard
to find at that time, and that was one of the main reasons that the
single flopped.

I once read on a review that the first 4 tracks from Jewel are the
best of it, and the rest is useless. I don't have jewel, and I've
only heard the first 3 singles, do you think this is true? I Believe is
very good, Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing isn't very good, the
song underrates Marcy's & Elton John's voices, and it's boring (probably
because there's Elton John singing on it, he's soooo bad). I know
that most people don't like I'm No Angel, but I think it's kinda good,
with a catchy chorus, and the end of the song is very good although
not a good choice as a single release.

What's that Without Medication single? Is it a live EP, similar to
Shakespears Sister My 16th Apology single? Speaking of it, My 16th
apology is probably the worst track from Hormonally Yours, only
surpassed, probably, by Let Me Entertain You - what's that caveman
whoa's?

Also, I was wondering if Marcy ever wrote a track for Vixen, an
all-girl hard rock/metal group that had three or four hits in the UK
& the US in the late 80's (Edge Of A Broken Heart, Cryin'), called Love
Made Me, which was even released as a single. Mind you, Vixen are one
of my favourite groups, and if Marcy collaborated writing that track,
she did a great job, as I think it's one of their best.

And finally, which is the name of the song that Marcy did for the
Short Circuit soundtrack? On which scene of the film does it appear?
I believe she did a song for that film, didn't she?

Cheers,

Cristian

[The song "Follow Me" is a duet with Max Carl. It appears at the end of the movie, just before the final credits. I've never been able to find confirmation that this soundtrack was released, but you can hear the song if you get the video of the movie! Mike]

No, as to me, I do not think so. "Prima donna" is perfect!!! I wish it had been realised as a single. But I do realize that this song is not commercial. "You don't tell me everything" had all the potential to be a single and I think Marcy understood that pretty well when she put that as a b-side on her "Perfect World" CDSingle.
My friends who listened to "Jewel" and who know Marcy only because I am crazy about her told me that their absolutely favorite song from the album was "Art of Melancholy"...
Actually, the album was released in February of 1994 (if I am not mistaken) and in January of 1994 in the music magazine called "Popcorn" there was an article about marcella's forthcoming album....."Art of melancholy" . Yeah, it seems that she wanted to entitle it "Art of Melancholy" at first and then prefered "Jewel".
I think "Art of Melancholy" is a great song and the title is as great. it is sooo magic.
By the way, what about "I want to take you higher"????
just buy 12" Single for I believe" and promo 12" for "I want to take you higher". They are still available in some vinyl stores over the Internet.
And finally, "Ain't nothing like the real thing'....
It is not so bad!!! And the video is so romantic. Marcy wears her paper dress there from British couturier Housein. That is fun. But I really think that this song does not represent Marcella. Her potential is fully expressed in her second post shakespears album.
love,
Andrei

P.S. The album would be bigger if 'You own the Moon" and "Lay down Sally" were on it!!! Strange, Marcella promoted album, presented "Lay Down Sally" live and when the album was released "Lay Down Sally"was not there!? Ha ha ha. Not fair!!!

'Out of my mind' is a beautiful song and is beautifully sung by Marcy. I am

Once again if anyone hasn't heard it "You Own the Moon" is an excellent song

I'm sorry but have you read this mailing list recently? Like most mailing
lists it has inevitably fallen to the small-minded bitching of fans who
verbally masterbate on and on. The above message contravenes its own
intent. Grow up. Thanks Ed for your kind and supporting comments, I really
appreciate it. And not to put a too finer point on it, what has Siobhan
done musically anyway? It's been four years since she released anything
officially on her own and even that wasn't good enough to warrant an album
release (I of course, think that her solo stuff is really fab, but after
subjecting numerous unbiased people to it, they think that its CRAPOLA!)
So we're left with the question: was Siobhan really the talent of
Shakespear's Sister, or was she carefully manipulated by svengali-esque
Dave Stewart? In summary: "You can take the girl out of bananarama, but
you can't take the bananarama out of the girl". Thanks F&S.
