SSML-24, 25 June 1996

Hi everyone, If anyone misses any "issue" of the SSML, just let me know and I'll
mail you another copy (hence the numbering). And does anyone know what's
happened to Sean Shafer? (sshafer@olie.wvitcoe.wvnet.edu) His address doesn't seem
to work anymore. Marcy now has a website as well: http://www.marcelladetroit.com
and an e-mail address: detroit@atlas.co.uk Thanks to Janine at the SS fan club for this
information.
Sad news from the UK with "I Can Drive" dropping out of the top 40 this week, after
spending only 1 week in the chart, at its debut position of no. 30. This will probably
kill the idea of a CD-2 (perhaps they should have released it sooner). It seems to be
following the pattern of the first single from each album not doing very well (i.e.
Break My Heart and the original Goodbye Cruel World). We can only hope the
pattern will continue and the 2nd single be will a big success!
 Mike.

Subject: REVIEW of SS
If anyone wants to send me a well-written review that you've written on any of
the Shakespears Sister/Marcella Detroit albums or concerts please do so. I'm looking
for reviews for my new MUSIC REVIEWS web site:
http://remus.rutgers.edu/~ghuliani/reviews.html Perhaps a review of the new singles
would be nice!

The following is a review of SS from James Masterton, who has a weekly
chart analysis mailing on the newsgroups (alt.music.uk?): 30 I CAN DRIVE
(Shakespear's Sister) After a break of 3 years, Siobhan Fahey reappears to reactivate
her chart career. Now devoid of the distinctive vocals of Marcella Detroit,
Shakespear's Sister are now just a front for the former Bananarama singer. Quite what
effect that will have remains to be seen, part of the appeal of the group was the way
the contrasting vocal styles of the two ladies played off against one another. This new
single is written by Siobhan, husband Dave Stewart and one Robert Hodgens, the
former lead singer of the Bluebells. The significance here is that Fahey and Hodgens
were together responsible for 'Young At Heart', the track that became a reissued
Number One for the Bluebells in 1993.

I haven't seen the clip with Siobhan. Knowing her past fashion flair, she will
surprise us all. Just take a look at the photos of her in the past, she actually stood out-
-the hair tied up in rags. She is nice gal. A little misguided, but a talented one.
There are some interesting comments made on the Bananarama's list about
Shakespear's Sister success without Marcella. Let us all remember that the SS was
created by Siobhan and I don't think it was her intention to be a duo. Marcella came
along, they got along nicely until Marcella asked to be more involved. Least of all, let
us not forget that Marcella has not been successful either way before Shakespear's
Sister. It is true her voice complimented Siobhan's, but let's say Siobhan will well
without her. Look at Bananarama they are singing their old songs without the benefit
of the third persona. Call me a old "goody two shoes" I think only of the best in
people. I see both sides of the issues and realize that you have to know all the facts
before you condemn anyone.

Thanks very much for the lyrics, Mike ... I actually thought the first line was
Suddenly You were more than an EXIT ... but Accident makes a lot more sense. It's
the second line that stumps me though .... it DOES sound like Peter and Dean but
what does that mean ? I love Suddenly and have been singing it as i sashay my way
down the corridors to tutorials, lectures etc and it's dead irritating not to be able to
sing it properly because i can't make out the words. And like i said, even though i
don't like siobhan as a person, i will not deny that she writes great music. her lyrics
are especially ace. i think you're right though about her and marcie ... it didn't work
out but i don't think it was a very BITTER breakup ( like with the 'nans ) because i
guess they were never really friends to begin with ie it had always been a professional
rather than personal relationship and these are easier to dissolve. I read an interview
somewhere where Siobhan said that Marcie was just ' someone i work with '. Which
is all well and good - but that's what i like so much about the nanas. It's the friendship
between sara and keren that gets to me. i love ss music FAR more than nana music
but i think the nanas are far more interesting and fabber people ! Thanks again for the
lyrics to Suddenly Kei
