Subject: Feminist Songs
There seems to be a crop of feminist songs being released around this time. I could
name a handful (besides "I Can Drive") that have been released in the last few
months. I wanted to know what you guys think are some of the better feminist songs
to come out recently. My vote goes EASILY to "Woman" by Neneh Cherry.

A few weeks ago I might have nominated the Spice Girls' Wannabe, except that I'm
beginning to hate it now.
Special thanks to Lisa at the Fan Club who says that the album is now due for release
in early 1997... A second single was planned for release before Christmas, though
whether this happens or not remains to be seen.
Lisa also says
" Siobhan just got back from Ireland where she was working on a small film (a friend
of Siobhan's who was working on the film asked Siobhan if she would like to be in it).
At the moment she is working with producer Steve Lironi in London. She recently
put together a new band together to record some new material.
I'm sure you heard that Siobhan and Dave have split (this is true)."
The address of the fan club, Harmonally Yours, is 5 Freda Corbett Close, LONDON,
SE15 6UN, ENGLAND.
Mike.

Finally for now, the first (and only??) batch of results from the 2nd survey. Please
feel free to send in your replies if you haven't done so already. Let me know if you
want the questions again.
> a. what other artists do you enjoy besides
Bananarama, Whigfield, Ace of Base, Madonna, ALL eurodance, Cathy Dennis, Pet
Shop Boys....and also Paula Abdul
Bananarama, george michael, eurythmics, adventures
Sheena Easton, Neneh Cherry, Sam Phillips, Enya (Marcy of course)
Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, Bananarama, Erasure, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos,
Alanis Morisette, Blondie
Bananarama, Cyndi Lauper, Sam Brown, Lisa Stansfield, Eurythmics/Annie Lennox,
Stevie Nicks, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys.
> b. what is your opinion of Siobhan's material sans Marcella
heard only one song and it sounds okay....but Marcella's vocals were an important bit
in former singles....REUNION!!!
its better.
From what I've heard (four or five songs) it not as good. Lyrically SS has
always been weak, I think, except for some nice lines here and there. However, the
music is also a problem now. I Can Drive is a nice attempt at feminism but it's hardly
gracefully done. The music is also very awkwardly arranged. On "Oh No, It's
Michael" (which I'm starting to like more now) the music is better but Siobhan doesn't
really sound like she wants to be singing it. I won't even mention "Prehistoric Daze."
Siobhan should go for a harder rock sound - her voice suits it. And maybe get a
different writing partner other than Dave Stewart.
I quite like it. I was a little apprehensive listening to "I CAN DRIVE" at first, and I
thought it was awful. Know I have grown to like it a lot. I really think the deep growl
of Siobhan with Marcy's high pitched squeals were a winning combination. I don't
think Siobhan will be as successful solo though.
It is quite fabulous: my basic love for SS is centred on Siobhan's talents and voice, but
I can't help but feel that there is something missing without Marcy. They had a
fantastic winning combination, and it's a shame Siobhan couldn't continue in that way.
On the other hand it now gives us _two_ artists to enjoy!
> c. what are your fave SS remixes; who would you like to see remix a SS
> song--which song?
:(..haven't heard anY!!
fave mix? GCW (BTO) BMH (shep pettibone); IDC dance remix is needed.
I hate remixes in general. They get very tired.
My fave is the "Goodbye Cruel World" BTO Remix. As well I love the Revolution
Remix of "Run Silent" and the Green Eyed Dub of "Black Sky". I would love to see
Armand Van Helden do a SS remix.
The remixes of Black Sky are just too fabulous for words. Overall though, I'd have
to say the Pull Down Your Pants mix of I Can Drive is HOT!
We need some heavy dance makeovers. Armand Van Helden would be great. Some
standard (albeit cliched) David Morales and Junior Vasquez factory mixes would be
good. On the other hand, the use of relatively "unknown" remixers for I Can Drive
(i.e. Rachel Auburn and Roger Fearless) produced some interesting results, and it
probably fits in better with Siobhan's desire to be "different" to go with the unknowns
and not the generic dance stuff.
> d. what is your favorite lyric from a SS song
ALL the lyrics in "I DOn't Care"!!
i. ...break down the door and reach for the power drill, put holes in the wall better get
my happy pills.."
ii. ...walking through the rooms in my head I came across your image you looked at
me with that sweet smile and said something they wont let me repeat...
iii ...don't talk of revolution as a thing of the past...
iv...faces thin as credit cards I walk past people selling simple sex and all the records
using cheap effects...
"When your pride is on the floor, I'll make you beg for more" (wicked). That's
just a spontaneous answer.
My fave is from "You Made Me Come to This":
"Hey! How are your friends doing these days? Are they still stupid?!"
You Made Me Come To This:
"Hey! How are your friends doing these days? Are they still stupid?" So bitchy. So
typically Siobhan! A Bananarama reference??!!! (Ooops, we're not supposed to
promote hatred between them anymore are we, since they may do a single together
sometime!) :-D
> e. what do you think the future of SS will be with Siobhan gone solo
She's gonna kick ass!!
WORLD DOMINATION
It doesn't look good from how the charts have received her. I think she could
have blasted back with force if she chose a better song for her first single in four
years! Still, I definitely think she can pull it off.
Not as successful. I think Marcy was an integral part of SS, although it shall be
interesting to hear more of the new material. Dave Stewart was also a great working
part of the group, and only time will tell if she can meet the success of HY.
There won't be the mega-successful hits like You're History and Stay. It'll be more
low-key. I hope she'll be happy with this and will stick around and keep making
music.
> f. what was your favorite Siobhan look in the days of Bananarama;
5 words "ROBERT DE NIRO'S WAITING" video!!
robert de niros' and recent
Clueless on this one.
I loved her most in the "I Can't Help It!" video. She looked so fab in the days of
WOW! I always thought she was the most stylish and having the most fun.
The fantastic light brown hair in the I Can't Help It video, and sleeve of Greatest Hits.
Also the black roots under platinum blonde look in Venus is fabulous!
> post-Bananarama
She looks eerily great on the CD cover of "Stay". I have yet to get a look at her new
look, as the CD single picture reveals little.
The super-curly long black hair was great.
> g. have you ever seen SS in concert? If so, describe the experience
:(...no but I dreamt that I saw the "I can Drive" video!!:(
no
No, damnit!
NO! unfortunately, they only went to Toronto! Damn them!
NO! Sob!
> h. movie soundtrack you'd most like to see SS work on
I wish she was on "trainspotting"!!
AbFab
Obviously if Catwoman got her own movie (with Michelle Pfeiffer reprising
her role) SS would be the obvious choice!
TRAINSPOTTING! Heroin '96 (sans the 'e') would have been a brilliant remix for the
movie. I can envision the video with Siobhan looking all fucked up in a room
suffering from withdrawal, and little snippets of the movie interspliced. She would be
a living metaphor for heroin, (and have a similar makeup look as in the "Stay" video),
taunting people who need a new 'kick'. So cool..
Any tacky fab cult film.
