SSML-42, 19 November 1996.
Hi everyone,
A real mixture of stuff this time.
Thanks to Sha for the following UK chart positions. Sarah Mager is currently
working on adding this sort of detail for Shakespears Sister to the various Bananarama
discographies/trackographies, so if anyone would like to add any for any country,
please contact her (smm@pequod.otago.ac.nz) or me
(devery@vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au)

Another point of interest: A friend of mine from Liverpool, UK,
gave me the following chart positions of Shakespears Sister singles and albums. I
thought you might find it informative. Run Silent did chart, according to the NME.
1. Break My Heart/Heroine --> did not chart
2. You're History --> #7
3. Run Silent --> #36
4. Dirty Mind --> did not chart
5. Goodbye Cruel World --> did not chart
6. Stay --> #1
7. I Don't Care --> #7
8. Goodbye Cruel World --> #31
9. Hello --> #11
10. My 16th Apology --> #56
11. I Can Drive --> #30
1. Sacred Heart --> #9
2. Hormonally Yours --> #3
Sha.

Some of these positions seem a bit low: I thought the re-released GCW had done
much better (i.e. top 10) and I thought IDC has gone top 5. On the other hand, I didn't
think Hello had done so well!
Mike.

guess what I did for Halloween? my friend Dave and I dressed up as Bananarama and
performed "venus." (I was Siobhan and he was Sarah) we actually lost the contest, but
it was fun just to make everyone watch the video and hear the name repeatedly. and I
brought my Dave stewart along to insult the group and persuade me to form
shakespear's sister. needless to say we confused a few people...

1. Best single
Well, the only one I bought was "I Don't Care", so I don't have much of
an opinion 2. Best single from Sacred Heart
Unfortunately Couldn't get any, didn't even know about Shakespear's Sister until
"Hormonally Yours" came out.
3. Best single from Hormonally Yours
See #1
4. Best album
Oooh, a toughie... let's just say it's a tie.
5. Best video clip
Hormonally Yours - "I Don't Care", I just love the
'murderous-intentions' scenes
6. Best B-side
The "Stay" Acoustical, but see #1 anyways, but only if you really feel
like it... :)
9. Do you generally buy Shakespears Sister
CD singles? no, but I should've I suppose, same for rest of the options...
Cassingles? 7"? 12"? CD albums? Cassette albums? LPs? DCC (digital compact
cassette)?
10. Are you a member of the fan club?
Knew there was something I've been meaning to do...
11. Are you a fan of Marcella Detroit?
Yes, She's not as Dark as Siobhan appears to be, but she's just as good
in her own way
12. Do you buy Marcy's releases?
Yes, Loved it. 13. Are you a fan of Bananarama?
not really, but I've been considering buying some "Siobhan-era" releases.
14. What questions would you like to ask Siobhan?
I don't think I have any need to ask either Siobhan or Marcy questions. Any questions
about upcoming releases, they've been asked plenty of times before, so I'm sure
they're tired of repeating the same answers - plus there's press releases for that sort of
thing. I couldn't ask about previously released materials, because interpretations of
songs are extremely subjective. And I wouldn't dare ask about their personal lives,
because celebrities deserve their privacy just like everyone else.
15. Any further comments?
I would've liked to have heard some of their "Sacred Heart" material when it
originally came out, but unfortunately the "Stay" video was my first experience of
their musical talents, so I had a late start. It was hard finding copies of the "Sacred
Heart" album and the "Hormonally Yours" Video for me and some friends, and I
would've loved to have found a copy of the "Sacred Heart" Video, but from what I
understand they are difficult to find and only available in the European video format
(though that part is easy enough to fix). And posters, there doesn't seem to be
anyplace that sells posters of them. Anyone know of somewhere I didn't look? One of
my favorite things about Shakespear's Sister, is that they were the only musical group
that every song that they released, I liked. For everyone else, there's at least one song
on an album that I don't like.
So...
Worst video? There's a bad video?
Worst track on SH? There's a bad track?
Worst track on HY? There's a bad track?
Later :)

ps. Apparently there's still problems with my mail server every so often. So don't
despair if you can't get a message through, just try and try again. If I notice it's been a
while hearing from you guys, I'll try contacting you through one means or another...

[Comments on recently heard tracks....]
>DIRTY MIND 1990 is so strange. Not at all what I expected. I have enjoyed SS
>remixes very much--very innovative and well done (the Nans should take note)-- but
this mix has me undecided. The Marcy rap bit is rather weird. I don't think white
people should rap. The Nans learned that lesson in "Hooked On Love"--and we all
know what a disaster that song is! Whatya think? The EZEE mix is much better...
>
>RUN SILENT is such a beautiful song. I feel more confident saying that, >rather
than STAY which I don't truly feel is a love song. It appears on a CD collection of
love songs, and is completely out of place. Nice mix, I prefer the Revolution mix
though! I have yet to see that video too.
>
>TAKE ME TO YOUR HEART is almost identical to the disco mix on the ZYX
>release. Aside from the SHY BOY bit which works surprisingly well, I have never
really been a big fan of that song. Where is this mix from?
>
>MR WRONG is one of my fave SS songs. I think this would have made a great
single along with YMMCTT. It is a shame I don't have a copy on CD. There is
something about this song that I truly love. This is a great example of how Siobhan
and Marcy really work well together vocally. A fab b-side! I have yet to hear the b-
side of BMH, but you have mentioned it too is great....next tape maybe?
>
>BLACK SKY has had some great remixes as b-sides on various singles. I have yet
to see this one appear. Where is it from? Nice work here. I have always enjoyed the
mixes of this song better than the actual HY version which is pretty plain.
>
>YOU'RE HISTORY (DMC) fucking rocks! I love this version!! Where's this from? I
also love the DMC mix of Bananarama's Na Na Kiss.. .so wonderful! A great club
mix which has true house potential!! This works very well for the song. I like it better
than the original remixes. Who is DMC? I am dying to here the Brothers In Rhythm
remix. When did BIR remix this song and where was it made available?
>
>Marcella b-sides....well, I guess I love SS as Marcy + Siobhan. Their solo efforts
don't really grab me. I wasn't all that impressed. Marcy's sound is very different from
her work with SS. The Jewel album is good, but not at all what I (or most fans for that
matter) expected. Dull... I am interested in hearing I HATE YOU NOW which is
supposed to be rather good.
>Denny :)

>MR WRONG is soooooo great! I love that song!

Finally for now, here's a late review of Marcy's single from the Australian magazine
"Buzz" (October 1996):
" Marcella Detroit: I Hate You Now
Very ordinary indeed. Marcella Detroit, formerly one half of Shakespears Sister and
blessed with quite an extraordinary voice, has come up with what sounds like a
seventies disco tune, with a couple of strange asides. The jazz/funk/metal B-side
"Boy" is much more interesting. (Festival)".
