SSML-45, 18 December 1996.
Hi everyone,
I guess this will be the last SSML before Christmas, so Seasons Greetings to
everyone. Lets hope we have a big Shakespears Sister (and Marcy) New Year!
Welcome to Neil Goward who has a fantastic SS site at
http://egrorian.internetfci.com/~ngoward/
Marcy's new single "Boy" was released in the UK on December 2nd, again on Triple
AAA Records. Does anyone know the tracklisting?
This was a review from NME recently I think:
MARCELLA DETROIT: Boy (AAA)
"... She's frighteningly good, dammit, and this totally silly song about gender
benderisation (complete with '80s-style daft Dalek voices) is as wonderfully
unChristmassy as it gets, but it is unfortunately not the bollocks of any canine you'd
look at twice."
The good news is it has charted, debuted at #102. Unfortunately the Top 200 wasn't
included in Dominator's chart this week, so we don't know what happened to it this
week. From memory this debut is slightly higher than the one for "I Hate You Now"
earlier this year.
Dominator's UK Top 40 Chart Analysis (w/e December 14th 1996)
102 !NEW! 1 102 Marcella Detroit: Boy
I'm not sure what sort of chart the following is (anyone know any Czech
languages??!!), but "I Can Drive" is _currently_ at no. 88 in a Czech Republic (??)
chart. Details (in Czech though!) at:
http://www.capitol.cz/kultura/hudba/hitparada/1996/
It was at no. 79 for the week ending 29 September 1996, and seems to have been
bubbling around the lower end of the Top 100 for the last few months.
Mike.

I though that was ground-breaking news! :(
Hilarious though...what is that tape interface at the bottom of the picture for? Weird.
You see, I just started using the new version of Internet Explorer (which is great by
the way) and that was the first time I noticed that scrolling. Days have become months
I suppose

Hey are STOCK AITKEN a team again? I love that song Santa Maria--I think it was
written for Bananarama. The new Pet Shop Boys KICK ASS!
What do you think about the spice girls?
Denny :)
People! Let's try not to forget Monday Dec. 16 is Denny's 25th birthday. By the way,
this is his conscience speaking, so don't think it's a hint to wish him well...

Cheers to Diana for noting the following:

Yesterday I accidentally came across the 'Never mind the Buzzcocks' quiz on BBC. I
read in your mail that Marcy was supposed to show herself there sometime soon, so I
waited till I saw all the contenders and decided that this wasn't the correct episode.
But still I kept watching.... And it was only when the lady with the short peroxide
blond hair started to speak that I realised it was Marcy !!! She looked so different... In
her neck her hair wasn't as short as Annie's [from Eurythmics] was in the Touch
period, but it wasn't much longer either. Her forehead was covered. Diana de Bruin.

SHAKESPEARS SISTER would never have stood the test of time as long as
MARCELLA DETROIT was a member of the group, according to singer SIOBHAN
FAHEY. The former BANANARAMA star and Detroit went their separate ways in
1994 after a string of hit singles, including STAY and YOU'RE HISTORY. Now
Fahey is back as Shakespears Sister with a new album - and reveals that she never
sees Detroit. Fahey says, "She always lived in Los Angeles and I presume she's still
there now. It's really hard for British and American people to understand each other. I
felt that in our partnership." SHAKESPEARS SISTER singer SIOBHAN FAHEY is
back with her ex-boyfriend - and husband DAVE STEWART approves. Fahey dated
BOBBY BLUEBELL, former frontman with THE BLUEBELLS, more than a decade
ago when they co-wrote the British number one single YOUNG AT HEART. Now
the duo and ex-EURYTHMICS star Stewart are working together on songs for Fahey.
She says, "Bobby is still a really old friend of mine. We've got a 100 per cent track
record together. After all, Young At Heart was the only song we wrote and it was a
number one when it was re-released. We started ringing each other up with
congratulations. It brought us together." The pair also penned Shakespears Sister's
current single I CAN DRIVE. FAHEY admits life will never be easy for her. Fahey,
married to former EURYTHMICS star DAVE STEWART, explains, "What a struggle
it has been for me as a woman to take control of my own life and my own creative
destiny. I don't think I'm a freak in that. It's exactly where most women are today. At
times I can be volatile. I'm a time bomb. I have a long gradual build up before I
explode. My bomb probably goes off more often than I think." Fahey and Stewart
have two children, SAM, five, and eight-year- old DJANGO. But their relationship is
anything but normal. Fahey adds, "Dave didn't expect a normal person. Any
relationship is like a battle. It's not true that our relationship is great, but we do our
best to muddle on. Most families these days can't function because of the way society
is crumbling."

Former SHAKESPEARS SISTER star MARCELLA DETROIT has sent a cryptic
message to her ex-partner SIOBHAN FAHEY pleading with her to end their war of
words. Fahey, who hopes to return to the British charts next week with a new-look
Shakespears Sister, has upset Detroit in interviews by saying she was little more than
a hired hand. But Detroit insists her songwriting was a major factor in the duo, whose
hits included STAY and YOU'RE HISTORY. And as Detroit plans her own solo
comeback, she has sent Fahey a fax hoping to patch up their differences via her new
record company TRIPLE A RECORDS. But, mysteriously, both her former partner's
name and the duo's quirky moniker are spelt wrong in the letter. In Detroit's `peace'
fax, Siobhan becomes "SIOBAN" while the group's name becomes
"SHAKESPEARE'S SISTER." Triple A chairman JOHN CAMPBELL also writes, "It
seems fair that we try to redress the balance and request Sioban (sic) ceases her
irrelevant but sadly upsetting backbiting and bickering. Shakespeare's (sic) Sister was
just one in a series of great moments in Marcella's career. Marcella wishes Sioban all
the best and asks for peace and harmony to reign between them." Detroit insists her
new single I HATE YOU NOW is not about her former partner. Fahey's
spokeswoman REGINE MOYLETT says, "If all these so-called comments are so
irrelevant why is this fax circulating? It's something made out of nothing. Siobhan has
nothing to say about this at present."

Former BANANARAMA star SIOBHAN FAHEY says she has spent 38 years
wrestling with her sanity. The SHAKESPEARS SISTER singer, who has a "perceived
idyllic lifestyle", with husband former EURYTHMICS rocker DAVE STEWART
asks "When do you know you're sane?" She is successful, rich and famous, has two
lovely children and spectacular houses in London, France and Los Angeles and a
husband who is one of the most respected men in pop music. But she is still negative.
Fahey explains, "I don't walk around thinking, 'Haven't I done well ? I walk around
thinking, 'God I am such a hopeless failure, I am a hopeless mother, a hopeless wife, I
have to try harder.' I have a brain that functions in a self destructive way and I have
had a few brushes with mental illness. " She has a litany of doctors, analysts, gurus
and alternative therapists. But as she puts it, "I am just a pathetic case history." Fahey
once said, "I am a mad witch from hell. I am sick of pretending I am not. This is what
I am. I have periods of enormous self-destructive depression, where I go completely
off my trolley and lose all sight of reality and reason." Fahey has just released a new
single called I CAN DRIVE and is looking forward to being on BBC TV chart show
TOP OF THE POPS again. She puts her mental state on an inability to grow up. She
explains, "I am still grappling with all the things that most people resolve by the time
they are 35. It is not healthy, but it is a fact. So maybe that's why I still make music
that is relevant to young people. I'm emotionally stuck at the age of 13."

Former SHAKESPEARS SISTER star MARCELLA DETROIT has launched a bitter
attack on her ex-singing partner SIOBHAN FAHEY. The pair enjoyed a string of
smash hits such as STAY and YOU'RE HISTORY with their trademark black eye
make-up and pasty faces. But now it looks as though they could end up with real-life
black eyes as they both make comeback bids as solo stars. Detroit, 39, is furious her
old pal is claiming she wasn't involved in writing songs for their million-selling
albums HORMONALLY YOURS and SACRED HEART. She fumes, "I have been
following Siobhan around England and Scotland listening to things she has said about
me, claiming that I wasn't involved in the music. Apparently I didn't even help write
the tunes or anything. She is basically lying about me which makes me angry.
Siobhan had animosity towards me because Stay was a big hit and I was singing most
of it." Detroit, who also co-wrote ERIC CLAPTON's classic LAY DOWN SALLY,
adds, "That's her problem. The fact that she can't get on with her life is just pathetic."
She also denies her song HATE YOU NOW is about Fahey and says, "Siobhan and I
haven't spoken to each other in four years. There is no way I would hold it inside then
write about her after all that time. That would kill me. I don't even think about her.
The song is about someone who didn't have any faith or trust in me."
AlterSleaze: June 26, 1996
SHAKESPEARS SISTER star SIOBHAN FAHEY stands guard over her son's
record collection. The singer, who had a recent British hit with I CAN DRIVE, has
banned her eight-year-old son SAM from listening to outrageous rap stars THE
OUTHERE BROTHERS. Fahey, married to former EURYTHMICS star DAVE
STEWART, adds, "I got him the OASIS album instead."
AlterSleaze: July 16, 1996
The ongoing feud between former SHAKESPEARS SISTER girls SIOBHAN
FAHEY and MARCELLA DETROIT has taken another turn. Detroit has just released
a solo single entitled I HATE YOU NOW, complete with a lavish statement accusing
her former collaborator of "irrelevant but sadly upsetting back-biting and bickering"
in recent interviews. However, Detroit wants to assure people her new single is not
about Fahey, who is still working under the Shakespears Sister title. She wishes her
"the best for the future" and advises Fahey "to do as Marcella is doing and look to the
future, not to the past". But the statement is not being taken lightly by Fahey's
representatives. A spokeswoman says, "We are maintaining a dignified silence on this
whole sordid affair. We've seen a copy of Marcella's statement, and it just isn't true.
It's very tacky for her to drag up that old story and try to make something out of
nothing. The fact she's called the single I Hate You Now is absurd. We note, however,
that the record went straight into the British charts at number 96."
AlterSleaze: August 20, 1996
SHAKESPEARS SISTER star SIOBHAN FAHEY is to swap her glittering pop
career for the life of a junkie in a new film. Fahey is currently shooting CLEAN
BREAK, in which she plays a recovering heroin addict, in Dublin, Ireland. As Fahey's
character rehabilitates herself, her husband is still battling with his own inner demons.
And while the singer claims the movie does not mirror her own marriage to former
EURYTHMICS star DAVE STEWART, there are a few minor similarities. Fahey
admits they have often found it difficult to live together in harmony over the years.
She explains, "It's not easy at all. For years and years I didn't recognise there was a
conflict in our household. We've got different viewpoints and Dave works on such a
huge canvas. It's also difficult to live with someone who is so recognisable and so
famous. It erodes your sense of self when you're being venerated first and foremost as
his wife."

This Week's Legal News Updated: Friday 19th July
Queen Victoria sitting shot upon a rocking horse is not amused, and sues
Shakespears Sister's day in court approaches, with Siobhan Fahey and Marcella
Detroit sued for damages over a 1920's poem by Dame Edith Sitwell. Francis Tarjan
Sachervell Sitwell, sole representative of a trust established by Dame Edith, is
claiming legal ownership of Hornpipe, a poem written by Dame Edith in the 1920's.
He claims Fahey & Detroit and their music companies infringed copyright by using
eight lines of the poem in the song I don't care. It is the latest piece of music-related
litigation due to reach court, with former Beatles fighting against an illicit recording
from the Hamburg club in 1962, and Oasis vs. former drummer Anthony McCarroll
due to reach the High Court in just over a year.
