SSML-9, 27 April 1996

Newsflash!!

I just got a letter back from the Fan Club (it's actually called
"Harmonally Yours"), which stated in part:
"The new S.S. album will be released this summer and the first
single from the album will be out 27 May". (That's in the UK
anyway!)

There is a new subscription price of UK4.50 pounds for UK/Europe
subscribers, but it remains at US$9 for those in the US, or
UK5.50 pounds elsewhere. Cheques/checks or Money Orders should be
made payable to Janine LaDouceur, and sent to Harmonally Yours,
 5 Freda Corbett Close,
 LONDON, SE15 6UN, ENGLAND.

In her letter, Janine says that the fan club has actually
been running for 5 years. So we've been missing out all this
time! My cheque is now in the post.......

 Mike.

>[Mike]: Also, some nagging questions have come up while I've
been compiling the discography. It seems the US catalog number
for the Sacred Heart album was 422-828168-1/2/4 (compared to the
UK/AA 828131-1/2/4). Can anyone confirm this? And were there any
differences between the UK and US pressings?

Well most of the tracks are only off by a few seconds and that
rarely means anything, BUT "Could You Be Loved" is 4:13 it
actually has that "could you be could you be could you be loved"
rap-ish thing twice. one of them is only about a minute into the
song and the other one is towards the end (like the Uk version).
I never would have noticed this if you didn't ask!

> The US pressing of the Hormonally Yours album seems to have
some different mixes as well. "Let Me Entertain You" is longer
and quite different to the UK version (5.13 versus 4.43). Also,
Voyager's SS website lists track times for all the HY tracks, and
there seems to be differences in "Black Sky" and "The >Trouble
With Andre".: UK BS: 4.03 ; Andre 4.42 US BS: 4.18
; Andre 4.03

Ok, with "Andre" the US version fades out early during the
ending, but it doesn't seem like the UK is really 40 seconds
longer (I don't have a precise time on the UK one since I only
have it on vinyl, and the British see no reason to put running
times on their records!)

The US Black Sky Fades out rather than running into Andre, and
there is quite a gap between the two songs to account for that
time. They sound exactly the same (in a side by side comparison).
The US times you have are correct according to the CD.

It's the same thing with Let Me Entertain You. The US one has an
extra "HUH" at the end and then a long gap before the next track.
Once again, I don't know how to explain the 30 sec difference,
because side by side they are the same.

> I am also curious about the original single release of "Goodbye
Cruel World".  The original album version runs for about 4.06 ;
whereas most versions on the 1991 release of the singles seem to
run for I'm afraid your timings are off, or you are not taking
into account that the CD time includes silent lead-in and out. I
didn't actually time the different releases but did the side by
side playing thing again. (Sometimes having 2 turntables, two cd
players and a mixer does come in handy.) They all were the same.

> Finally: this darned "radio mix" for "Stay". The version of it
on the re-released HY album (828375-
1/2/4) runs a few seconds shorter than the original album mix
(828266-1/2/4/5), but that's the only difference I can pick up.
Any ideas as to how to tell apart the album mixes from the "radio
mix"?

A lot of the different mixes of the singles from this album are
barely different. Don't stress over it if you can't pick up on a
difference. You can try listening to them side by side, but I
don't know if it's worth it.

>[Jennifer]: i noticed in a few different interviews that s.& m.
refer to some sort of controversy regarding one of their videos--
but they never say what it was. does anyone have a clue what i'm
talking about? please explain his perplexing situation to me..

I think I read something about the "Stay" video being banned, or
restricted at least, in Germany due to the "demonic" image of
Siobhan's character in the clip. This is just from memory, so may
be totally wrong....it seems unlikely the clip would have been
totally banned anyway, though possibly it was only allowed to be
played in adult timeslots....?

>[Kenneth]: when was it decided to market them as more of a duo
(a la Hormonally Yours) and does anyone know if Siobhan had any
misgivings about their biggest hit's being sung primarily by
Marcella ("Stay")?

I guess we'll hear more about relations between Siobhan
and Marcy when the new album/single comes out, and the interviews
start happening. For now, though, Siobhan had this to say in
"Women, Sex and Rock'n'Roll" (by Liz Evans, Pandora, London
1994):

"By the time it came to the second album Marcy wanted to more of
a profile. I didn't want to be unfair to her, she was singing and
co-writing so I thought she ought to be in Shakespears Sister
with me. She wanted fifty percent of everything, so I said OK, as
long as I remained in the driving seat. And we actually worked
really well together, but it was weird because socially we didn't
gel at all. As people we just did not click".

In the next mailout, I'll list all the songs that Siobhan is
credited as having written (according to BMI).
