Hi everyone,
Here's that "lost" e-mail from Peter (binkyq@interport.net) again, regarding a showing of the video for I
Can Drive in a New York club:
*************************************************
Here's a really quick note (since it's 3:30 AM here) to say I just saw the video in my favorite bar.
Here's the scoop: Siobhan is NOT blonde. It's hard to say what color her hair really is because it was all
shot with a green filter, but it looks pretty dark. It's very straight and long and parted in the middle. Her
make-up is very minimal, and she looks fabulous! The video itself is actually very dull. It's very
"alternative" a la Garbage/Sponge/Filter. Just the band performing/ her singing/ lots of jump cuts /bright
lighting but with dark filters. I don't know if it's a Sophie Muller or not. I'm very disappointed if it was her
handiwork since she usually does much more interesting things.

Subject: I Can Drive
I'm glad to see the single doing fairly well so far. I can't believe Smash Hits gave it zero stars--
those motherfuckers. I think it's a great song. I really like it and listen to it faithfully. I await those remixes
Peter mentioned even if they are a bit poor as he said. As for the lyrics, maybe that is assuming too much
by reading into it. The lyrics by the way are "Your 15 minutes start right here"--not "stopped right here" as
written. They are inside the CD sleeve by the way. I don't want to make any intellectual interpretation,
however, I find the lyrics very interesting nevertheless. My favorite line is "I can take you for a ride
anytime". Don't laugh but I thought the song was about a former prostitute who in retrospect is talking
about the men she "took for a ride". Of course men pick up women in their shiny cars, take them out for
dinner, etc; but she really took them for a "ride"--took those boys' money ("it's a steal"--easy money
essentially). Now she realizes that she's worth more than sixty pence, has declared a "new" innocence. She
has a shiny new car (presumably with the money she got from her former tricks) and she can pass by her
old world (where others have died/moved away/are in recovery) and move onto bluer skies. She's in
control now, she can drive, and make it on her own. She's a spaced out individual, a "sinner", but
essentially she is "real"--and that what people perceived her as is the "unreal"--she took us all "for a ride".
Denny PS Weird eh? *********************************************
I have checked the UK "Observer" newspaper for the 19th May, in which a SS interview apparently
appeared, but unfortunately it seems to have been in the paper's "Preview" magazine, which is a
supplement not shipped overseas, or not the library at my uni. anyway. Phooey! Mike.

London Records here in New York and they said the album or single is not scheduled for a US release yet.
That means that it could be a LONG time until it is released here (she said maybe even early next year!).
Damn. now I have to find another way to hear this song because I am VERY curious. Can anyone help me
out? Sefan (ghuliani@remus.rutgers.edu)

company in Florida called CD Europe. Their web address is http://www.cdeurope.com/Home.html The
cost is $12.95 plus $3.50 for shipping and handling. Total cost is $16.45. It will take about 3 to 4 weeks for
delivery. You can pay by credit card or send a check or money order. They will probably have the album
listed upon release. They have a big catalog of artists and titles, try them. I hope this has been helpful in
your quest. Any problems or results, let me know. Good Luck! Shakespear's Sister has always and will be
style conscious. Even in her Bananarama's days, Siobhan was always fashionable and trend setting.
Siobhan has a flair for fashion and style. After all, she was a graduate of a fashion school. Regards, Peter

Suddenly: Maybe I should simplify it Well I didn't care Why bother to deny it? You just happened to be
there I was just a sad survivor You made it clear But you took my indecision For something sinister
Suddenly we were more than an accident Magically we were Peters & Dean (???) Surgically way beyond
separation Tragically we just couldn't agree
Maybe I should clarify it /It was doomed from the start I gave you a starring role
But you tried to take my part And even as the stars are shining As we celebrate You know I can't help
thinking
What a cruel twist of fate
Suddenly....etc.
Oh god I like your sense of humour But I'll be looking out for it in future!
Oh babe I can't smile without you Can't smile when I'm blue If you only knew what I'm going through I just
can't smile (Then: Suddenly chorus overlayed with I can't smile without you etc.)

Sad news from the UK with "I Can Drive" dropping out of the top 40 this week, after spending only 1 week
in the chart, at its debut position of no. 30. This will probably kill the idea of a CD-2 (perhaps they should
have released it sooner). It seems to be following the pattern of the first single from each album not doing
very well (i.e. Break My Heart and the original Goodbye Cruel World). We can only hope the pattern will
continue and the 2nd single be will a big success! Mike.

The following is a review of SS from James Masterton, who has a weekly chart analysis mailing
on the newsgroups (alt.music.uk?): 30 I CAN DRIVE (Shakespear's Sister) After a break of 3 years,
Siobhan Fahey reappears to reactivate her chart career. Now devoid of the distinctive vocals of Marcella
Detroit, Shakespear's Sister are now just a front for the former Bananarama singer. Quite what effect that
will have remains to be seen, part of the appeal of the group was the way the contrasting vocal styles of the
two ladies played off against one another. This new single is written by Siobhan, husband Dave Stewart
and one Robert Hodgens, the former lead singer of the Bluebells. The significance here is that Fahey and
Hodgens were together responsible for 'Young At Heart', the track that became a reissued Number One for
the Bluebells in 1993.

I haven't seen the clip with Siobhan. Knowing her past fashion flair, she will surprise us all. Just
take a look at the photos of her in the past, she actually stood out--the hair tied up in rags. She is nice gal.
A little misguided, but a talented one. There are some interesting comments made on the Bananarama's list
about Shakespear's Sister success without Marcella. Let us all remember that the SS was created by
Siobhan and I don't think it was her intention to be a duo. Marcella came along, they got along nicely until
Marcella asked to be more involved. Least of all, let us not forget that Marcella has not been successful
either way before Shakespear's Sister. It is true her voice complimented Siobhan's, but let's say Siobhan
will well without her. Look at Bananarama they are singing their old songs without the benefit of the third
persona. Call me a old "goody two shoes" I think only of the best in people. I see both sides of the issues
and realize that you have to know all the facts before you condemn anyone. Peter (the other "Peter")

Thanks very much for the lyrics, Mike ... I actually thought the first line was Suddenly You were

DOES sound like Peter and Dean but what does that mean ? I love Suddenly and have been singing it as i
sashay my way down the corridors to tutorials, lectures etc and it's dead irritating not to be able to sing it
properly because i can't make out the words. And like i said, even though i don't like siobhan as a person, i
will not deny that she writes great music. her lyrics are especially ace. i think you're right though about her
and marcie ... it didn't work out but i don't think it was a very BITTER breakup ( like with the 'nans )
because i guess they were never really friends to begin with ie it had always been a professional rather than
personal relationship and these are easier to dissolve. I read an interview somewhere where Siobhan said
that Marcie was just ' someone i work with '. Which is all well and good - but that's what i like so much
about the nanas. It's the friendship between sara and keren that gets to me. i love ss music FAR more than
nana music but i think the nanas are far more interesting and fabber people ! Thanks again for the lyrics to

I've noticed a lot of Marcy bashing on both the Bananarama and Shakespears Sister list I feel I have to
respond.
Much as I love Siobhan (my FAV 'rama girl of all time.)... Marcella Detroit, AKA Marcy Levy, has been a
respected songwriter/musician/singer for many years. She did not use Siobhan Fahey as a wedge to get into
the music business. She WAS somewhere long before SS.
She's been writing songs for, and performing with people like Eric Clapton for ages. She co-wrote
"Lay Down Sally" with him. (Not that I like Eric Clapton, but he does have a pretty secure place in the
industry.) I know she also worked with Robin Gibb. > As far as I know both Jewel and her first solo album
did badly, but her other musical collaborations have been extremely successful. Her new single (I Hate You
Now) is brilliant, and you can really hear her part of the SS sound in it. I'm sorry to go off like that, but I
really think Marcy deserves her fair share of recognition both for her work with SS as well as her work
before.
>Peter (the first one)
>>PS. I've also seen an interview with her about the breakup of SS, and she was very gracious about the
whole thing. She mentioned how she found out that she was out of the band during Siobhan speech on that
award show, but she didn't sound overly bitter about it, just a little disappointed.

Just when you thought Shakespear's Sister was over after the departure of co-vocalist Marcella Detroit, Mrs
Dave Stewart, Siobhan Fahey, is back better than ever with a song that's only slightly not as weird as most

However, superb that it is, if it's only made No.30 on the first week out, I don't hold out much hope for it

*Yeah*!!! I am angry at Siobhan for continuing to use the Shakespears Sister name even after Marcy is
gone. As far as I am concerned, SS were *always* Siobhan *AND* Marcella, not one or the other! If she
wants to go solo, she should call herself "Siobhan Fahey", *not* "Shakespears Sister"!!! I don't care if she
invented the name. She alone is still not SS... The chemistry and contrast between the two personas was
absolutely *vital* to the sound and image of the group (yes, *group*). I've kept quiet 'til now, but the first
time I experienced Shakespears Sister was the video for "Goodbye Cruel World"-- and I just *know* I
wouldn't have been half as interested if it had just been Siobhan... Oh well. I just *knew*, sooner or later,
that sibling rivalry joke would become too real for comfort... :p
[Marcy]

Hi all!
I just got Marcella Detroit's new single in the mail. It's terrific! The a-side is called I Hate You Now and is
a bit of a dance track, while the b-side, Boy, is more guitar oriented. This single is on a new label for
Marcella. I guess she was dropped by London. Anyway, these are both great tracks, more of an alternative
sound. She could have gone so mainstream, this is such a relief! By the way, the lyrics don't seem to have
anything to do with Siobhan...

The following is a press release from London Records. (Special thanks to Janine at the Fan Club):
Shakespears sister is Siobhan Fahey. Her band, her tunes, her words.
When Siobhan was a little girl, moving around various parts of Britain with her family and eventually
settling in sunny Suburbia, she felt strangely disconnected from her class mates and fearing the wrath of
God as only Catholic girls can, pop music was her solace. The strange and glamorous world of Bolan,
Bowie, Roxy and the like shone like a beacon in an otherwise lonely and isolated existence.
Following her move to the metropolis at the tail end of the seventies -hair bleached, with a passion for
fashion and a note pad full of lyrics -she hooked up with two similarly disenchanted young woman and
Bananarama were bizarrely born. The rest really is history -gimpy dancing, public displays of
drunkenness, chain-smoking, bad language and a reputation which cast fear into record company reps
Europe wide. These girls really were the original female Lads.
By the time Siobhan quit the Banana's in 1985, she had co-written 12 top 30 singles and five hit albums in
addition to tracks she had written with other artists, most notably The Bluebells hit Young At Heart (which
made it to No. 1 when re-released in '93).
Siobhan then moved to LA, wrote a whole bunch of songs, hooked up with producer Richard Feldman and
session singer Marcy Levy, and with a moniker stolen from a favourite Smiths record, she invented
Shakespears Sister.
1988 saw the release of the debut album Sacred Heart, which spawned the first big UK hit, You're History.
Shakespears Sister were truly on their way to that elusive place known as the kingdom of pop.
In 1992, Hormonally Yours was released to critical acclaim. The first single Goodbye Cruel World had
fans and pundits licking their lips in anticipation, and together with its award-winning video, signalled the
next phase of Shakespears Sister. When Stay was released at the start of '92, it took only two weeks to hit
the British Number 1 spot, where it remained for eight weeks. The subsequent success of Hormonally
Yours, both domestically and overseas, was a triumph for Siobhan, who was at last getting credit where it
was due.
By the end of the year, HY had sold nearly 2 million copies, Hello (Turn Your Radio On), became the
fourth hit single from the album and the band had completed three triumphant UK tours, a series of club
dates in the US and a European stint.
All the hard work was rewarded when in early 1993, Siobhan won an Ivor Novello award for The
Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection for HY. That same year the video for Stay picked up Best
Video at The Brits and at the Music Week Awards. It was an exceptional year for the duo but in the end
they found their 'musical differences' impossible to rectify and went their separate ways.
The new eponymously titled Shakespears Sister album will be released later this year. Recorded between
March and October '95 in London, the South of France and Woodstock USA, many of the songs were born
in Siobhan's tiny studio home in North London. Shakespears Sister unashamedly harks back to the music
she has listened to all her life - T-Rex, Roxy Music, early Bowie, The Smiths, seminal British pop at its
most persuasive. Lyrically, Siobhan gives us an almost disconcertingly intimate and candid glimpse into
her life and relationships. From the trilogy of Come And Get Me, I Don't Envy You and I'll Take Anything
where the curious inner world of the disaffected English schoolgirl is explored, to Oh Dear where Siobhan
takes an amused, fatalistic look at the wreckage caused in life, both literally and emotionally, on to
Opportunity Knockers, with its opening line "Here come those tired old tits again", Siobhan shows
tendency towards irony and dark humour.
"I've never been afraid to show my ugly side, to laugh at it" says Siobhan. "So many songwriters seem to
write from a superior standpoint, about nobility and righteousness. I positively eschew that. I've always had
a very uncomfortable relationship with fame".
Produced by Siobhan, Dave Stewart and Alan Moulder and Flood, the album is steadfastly independent
from any scene and as impossible to pigeon hole as one would now expect from Shakespears Sister.
The release of SS is preceded in May by the single I Can Drive - a positive female anthem which declares
I'm in control/I'm driving this car/I'm back in no uncertain terms.
The uncrowned queen of British glam is back -and despite a growing musical maturity she (happily) shows
no signs at all of growing up.
April 1996. London Recordings.

My understanding of the whole fiasco was that the band nearly split in 1985 (ahh!) cas they were so
disillusioned and didn't want to release anything but were revitalised and reinspired to give it another go
hopped on the bandwagon once again and got lucky but it was while recording Wow in 1986 that things hit
a head again with pete and siobhan being at each others throats - one argument was the blatant materialism
content of strike it rich....it was against what she believed in....S&K must've done some bloody fast talking

Excuse me? Left Bananarama in 1985? Someone made a little bit of a blunder...the announcement and final
performance came in March of 1988 - where'd 1985 come from. Someone should smack London Records
good and proper for that one! And, i only make it *8* top 30 UK singles ("cheers then", "cruel summer",
'Robert de Niro's waiting", "rough justice", "i heard a rumour", "love in the first degree", "i cant help it" and
"i want you back") and even then, "I want you back" was released after she left, so in context that should
not be included either. Stupidly their count number includes "More than Physical" and "Hot line to
heaven" that weren't top 30's at all (41 and 58 respectively!), the remainder of Bananarama singles released
in the UK (aie a mwana, it ain't what you do, really saying something, shy boy, na na hey hey, do not
disturb, venus, a trick of the night) are penned by either others or their producers to get the figure *12* do
not disturb and a trick of the night also need to be included (both are written by Jolley & Swain). Stupid
stupid stupid record company!

Again, I thought the album was released in 1989, and only Break my heart was released in 1988 in the U.S.

The following was lifted from Marcella Detroit's web site
http://www.marcelladetroit.com/
where she comments on the her new single "I Hate You Now", and forthcoming album "Feeler". It's
interesting to note she's gone the Bananarama-route of going independent.....:
***************************************************************
Two weeks ago, Radio One made some kind of comment intimating that this song was about my ex-
partner, Ms. Fahey. However, it is not. We haven't spoken in four years and everything I write about is
very current. I f I were to harbor feelings like that for four years I would be feeling quite ill by now ! ! !
The real thing it's about, is absolute frustration, the feeling that no matter what you do for someone, it's
never good enough; you feel you are always trying to win them over and it is exhausting, draining and not a
lot of fun.
It's a great release to be able to say this, it's almost like a kid might say: "I hate you know" in the heat of
the moment and being able to do so, they can let go of it and move on.
Enough of that ! - HAPPY - the most exciting thing about this new album of mine is a real sense of
freedom. I'm no longer on London Records - my manager managed to negotiate me off the label and
suggested that we start our own label without the corporation "beefcake" flexing it's all consuming muscle
behind us.
So we are now independent ! ! ! risky, but very exciting, almost like bungee jumping ! !
Now - is great !
I have a new band with a kickin' rhythm section - all female - and play their tails off ! ! ! We're gearing up
to do some gigs in the U.K. around the release of my second single, probably sometime at the beginning of
August. So keep eyes and ears peeled for venues, dates etc. they'll be announced here as well.
I'll be updating this weekly so keep your antennae out baby ! ! !
Wishing you joy peace and happiness always... sincerely yours,
Marcy D . .

Hi everyone,
Apologies for the lateness of this mailout.
The single "I Can Drive" continues to slip down the UK chart, falling to #113 (for the week ending 13
July) from 73 (total 4 weeks on chart so far).
Marcella's single "I Hate You Now" debuted at #107 but appears to have dropped out of the Top 200 for
the week ending 13 July. This is possibly due to the fact that the single appears on an independent label,
Triple AAA. If you want to contact Marcy for more information, the e-mail address is:
detroit@atlas.co.uk
and the web site is at: http://www.marcelladetroit.com/
At this stage, overseas distribution for Marcy's album and single
is still being worked out. Thanks to Janine at the SS fan club for the following information:
Siobhan was recording for the next single in late June/early July (presumably a b-side??). The title was
not known as of 2nd July. However, it will be released in early August. An article on Siobhan appeared in
the July/August edition of the UK magazine "Arena", which presumably replaced the planned feature for
the Sept. edition. Siobhan was going to do 3 gigs during July, and was going to appear at the Gay Pride
Festival in London on 3rd July. Marcy was going to play as well, but was in Japan. Siobhan was due to
perform on the main stage right before Bananarama! The Narnas did perform, but it's unknown whether
Siobhan did....... Anyone know?? It's nice to think that Siobhan may have performed with the Narnas at
such an event....
Mike.

Subject: Help!!!
Hi, I was wondering if there is anybody out there who has the CD singles to "You're History",
"Run Silent", "Dirty Mind" and "Hello", and also the "Sacred Heart" video. I'd love to buy them off you, if
possible. I just came from the HMV in town, and the computer tells me that the aforementioned titles were
all discontinued, and it would mean a great deal to me if anyone out there is able to help me out. Even the
import stores in town can't get them anymore. :( I've tried the other people on the Internet, but they
haven't got them either (Sarah Manger was one of the people I tried). If you could help me out of this small
dilemma, I'm eternally grateful. My e-mail address is sdewa@chat.carleton.ca
I really appreciate your help. Thank you so very much!!

Hey all! Still anxiously awaiting my special order of "I Can Drive" -- the place from where I ordered it
couldn't afford their shipment today (it was in that shipment) so it was returned to sender until they get the
money together. Oh well, this is the life of a Siobhan fan in Washington, DC ... That SS press release says
that the album was recorded in the Spring of 1995 ... what's the deal? How long does it take to mix,
remaster an album? Is there an official release date now? I ordered the Hormonally Yours video
(impossible to find here) from 1-800-
ASK-TOWER a couple of weeks ago ... they say it's still in the computer, but that doesn't guarantee that it
exists (whatever that means). Anyone know where else it can be found?

Finally got my "I Can Drive" CD -- ended up having a friend in NYC get it for me at the Virgin
Megastore. It's really strange, but I guess everyone's saying it takes some getting used to. The
artwork/packaging is wonderful though (style over substance?) I also got my Hormonally Yours video.
"Goodbye Cruel World" is the best ... Siobhan was born to play Norma Desmond! The other videos (I had
never seen any of them) weren't so hot, especially "Hello (Turn Your Radio On)" -- kind of lame. I really
got to know HY before Sacred Heart, but now that I have SH on CD, I can't get over how much better it is.
I hope Siobhan doesn't continue in the Hormonally Yours style -- although the new single doesn't really
sound like either. All for now. Kenneth Walsh in Washington, DC
P.S. Is it true Bananarama and SS each performed in London recently?

Unfortunately I did not see SS at all. I think the narnas where sandwiched between JX and Sybil, But I was
quite drunk and cannot remember the exact running order as for the after concert, I was forced to go home
otherwise I may have been sick! But Bananarama were most excellent! Siobhan was recently on TOTP
with I can drive which was a flop here. SS may have been there but I cannot confirm it for you.

Yes SS did perform at the London Gay Pride event!! My friend was on holiday there and said she sounded
terrible!! YIKES!! Well I have the concert CD and it's quite good I think, although Marcy has stronger
vocals. Said to hear both of the girls' singles aren't doing so well!! And Bananarama were performing at a
club with Kylie and Dannii. They only sang 4 songs (pitiful!) but the crowd went wild. Gay people are so
much fun and have always been loyal to the Nanans!! I wish I were there with them!!
He even took some pics which I have yet to see!

Here's an anonymous review of the SS single:
Well there's a bit of a disparity among fans on what they think of it actually. Personally I thought the first
time that I heard "I Can Drive" that it was very poor and not very good at all, but after some diehard
playing about 6 or 10 times later I decided that it was actually very >very good. Lyrically it's quite a
spectacle actually. the starting music >is quite dull very typical early seventies sounding but near the end
the song gets a big breath of life and gets remarkably fabulous. Of >course, its done to sound like a serious
song by serious musicians so is a little predictable. The b-side "Oh no its michael" sounds very similar to
the material dave stewart recorded with Tom Petty in fact it >sounds very much like a Tom Petty song its
got some classic lyrics in it though...I like it lots but most fans have said unkind things about it... and the
third new song that is on the CDsingle is "Suddenly" which will >be on the new album. Personally
everyone I have spoken to about it thinks that this track is instantly likeable think of Siobhan trying her
hardest to sound like Chryssie Hynde of the Pretenders with a beat not > all that dissimilar to "Primitive
love" with an overdose of "Hot love" >and T-rex compositions and you've got an idea what Suddenly
sounds like. >Its fabulous but its appeal does wane a little. When I played I Can >Drive to a friend the first
thing she said was ..." I didn't know Phoebe > [..aka "Friends" TV show and the fabulous "smelly cat"
fame!] had >released another song..." sarcastic cow!
