Five days later
There was a knock on Leigh's front door. She opened it to see Nick.
"You know," Leigh said. "A week ago, I'd have fainted right now."
Nick grinned, stepping into the house. "Well, I promise to catch you if you feel faint."
"Thanks. Not to be rude," Leigh said. "But why are you here?"
"I'm taking you to the beach," Nick said. "I've already gotten permission from your parents."
"Really?" Leigh asked.
"Yeah," Nick said. "So go get anything you'll need today."
"Owww...burned in September," Leigh groaned. "Yeah, I'll remember you when you leave."
"Thanks," Nick said irritably.
The past five days had been great. Nick and Leigh became great friends with potential. And it was pretty obvious there was nothing going on between Brian and Leigh.
Today everything changed. Nick was getting food for them while his cell phone rang and Leigh answered it.
"Brian!" Leigh exclaimed. "No, he's getting food."
Nick came back to Leigh, finding her rather disturbed. "I don't want to talk about it Brian! No! Look, Nick's back, do you still want to talk to him?"
She handed Nick the phone. "You've got a firecracker Nick!"
"I'm beginning to think I don't have anything," Nick said. "What was that all about?"
"Nothing," Brian said, too quickly.
"Whatever," Nick said.
"Are you okay Nick?" Brian asked.
"I'm fine," Nick said. "I'm gonna eat. Bye."
There were tears in Leigh's eyes. Nick watched as she stared out at the ocean.
"This was a mistake," Nick said. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" Leigh asked.
"For trying to force you to like me when it's obvious you like Brian," Nick said.
Leigh was speechless.
"Lets go back," Nick said.
Leigh climbed into the rented BMW, silent tears falling down her face. Because of one stupid, inconsequential kiss.
They were in the middle of nowhere when the car sputtered to a stop.
"Stupid German cars," Nick muttered.
"We are not broken down," Leigh said.
"Fraid so," Nick said. He pulled out his cell phone. "Dammit!"
"What?" Leigh asked.
"The charge is dead," Nick said.
They started walking. By the time they reached civilization, it was dark. They decided to stay in a hotel and get back the next day.
So here they were, in a hotel room they had to share, becauase it was the only one left. To make matters worse, it was a single.
"Hey Nick," Leigh said softly.
"What?" Nick demanded.
"Nevermind," Leigh said. She was sitting on edge of the bed. She was going to cry again.
"I'm sorry Leigh," Nick said softly. He sat next to her and wrapped his arm around her. She looked at him.
"When do you leave California?" Leigh asked.
"Day after tommorow," Nick said. "The tour takes a month and a half break for personal reasons."
"Oh," Leigh said. "Nick, I'm sorry we don't get along."
"We get along," Nick said. "But we're only meant to be friends."
"But-"
"Look Leigh, I know you and Brian have a thang, I saw you kissing," Nick said.
"You saw?" Leigh asked, stunned.
"Yeah," Nick said. "And I was shocked, but what can you do?"
"I don't exactly know," Leigh said. "What anyone can do." Because I'm falling in love with you Nick Carter, but you won't listen.
Then Nick kissed her. It surprised Nick as much as it surprised Leigh.
"I'm sorry," Nick said, as he released her.
"For what?" Leigh asked.
Nick looked at Leigh. SHe had a rosy glow from both the sun and his kiss. "Nothing," he said, kissing her again.
