Vanessa woke up in Kevin's arms. It was nice to wake up in his strong arms. He had a great body. I wish this wasn't the last time, Vanessa thought. Kevin's breathing was steady.
Vanessa hummed a melody, not really knowing what it was, as she got out of bed, put on her red, terry-cloth robe, and went to her desk.
Two hours later, Kevin came up behind Vanessa and laid his hands on her shoulders.
Vanessa jumped, and then laughed. "You scared me out of my mind!"
"Sorry," Kevin said. "Whatcha doin'?"
"Writing something for you," Vanessa said. She handed him a sealed envelope. "Don't open it until you're on the tour bus."
"Okay," Kevin said. "Want breakfast?
"No," Vanessa answered, rising from her seat. "I just want you to hold me. How long can you stay?"
"About an hour," Kevin said. He was already dressed. "You know what I'm gonna miss most?
"My wonderful, witty conversation?" Vanessa asked.
"That too," Kevin shrugged. "Your hair. I could spend hours curling your hair around my fingers. I love how your hair feels. What will you miss?"
"Waking up in your arms," Vanessa said.
"I hadn't thought of that," Kevin said.
"What?" Vanessa asked.
"How much and how many things we're gonna miss," Kevin said. He held Vanessa tight. "I love you, and I don't even believe love can happen this fast. I keep telling myself that I'm being stupid, that it's not really love. But I can't deny it. I don't WANT to deny it. I love you."
"I love you," Vanessa said. "And I know how you feel. I'm going through the same things."
"Really?" Kevin asked. Vanessa nodded. "Then we have another thing in common."
"Yeah," Vanessa said, as she laughed. "Too bad we don't have a home town in common."
"I'm sorry," Kevin said. "I wish I could do something, but I'm on tour."
"Kev, I know you won't chase skirts or anything," Vanessa said. "And you'll tell me if you decide never to come back to me."
"But I want you with me," Kevin growled. "Hell, I need you with me."
"We can't Kev," Vanessa whispered. Tears were streaming down her face.
"The hell we can't," Kevin said. "Marry me Vanessa. Come on tour with me and we'll get married.
"You're crazy Kevin!" Vanessa said. "We can't just get married!"
"Why not?" Kevin asked. "We love each other. I can support us, and we can't live without each other!
"Kevin, it might ruin our lives!" Vanessa exclaimed.
"How could it?" Kevin asked.
"You'd come to resent me," Vanessa said. "I'd hold you back!"
"I can't live without you!" Kevin yelled.
"I can live without you," Vanessa whispered, hating herself the whole time for lying.
Kevin shot a cold stare at her. He tried to talk, but he couldn't. No words would come. Vanessa tried to take it back, she knew in her heart that she couldn't live without him. But she couldn't marry him either. Kevin turned and left, slamming the door behind him.
"Oh, I'm so sorry Kevin," Vanessa sobbed, as she fell to the floor. "Please don't hate me."
