Chapter Nine: The Second First Date

"Roses?" Dallas asked. "For me?"

"of course," Brian said.

"How sweet," Dallas said. "Come in while I put these in some water."

Brian was so nervous. He knew there was still physical chemistry between them, but he had no idea if they were still emotionally compatible.. He knew he wanted Dallas, but he wasn't sure if Dallas was still the same Dallas he had fallen in love with. Or if he was the same Brian she had fallen in love with. Plus, there was the added bonus that he hadn't been out with anyone since Leigh Anne and him had called it quits in January.

They went out for pizza. "So how do you like your pizza?" Brian asked.

"With cheese," Dallas said. "Don't you remember Bri?"

"You could've changed," Brian said.

They ordered pizza and talked the normal first date talk. Dallas fiddled with her straw, Brian played with his fork.

"We shouldn't be this nervous," Dallas said. "It isn't like this is our first date."

"In a way, I guess it is," Brian said.

"Yeah, in a way," Dallas said. "Do you remember our first first date?"

"Yeah. We went to the fair," Brian said.

"I wanted that huge stuffed giraffe," Dallas laughed.

"So I entered a pie-eating contest," Brian finished. "At least it was blueberry and nothing disgusting."

"You were my hero when you won," Dallas said. "And when you carried the giraffe all around the fair."

"Do you still have the giraffe?" Brian asked

"Yeah, Tommy's in my closet," Dallas said. "You can see him if you want."

"That's okay," Brian laughed. "So do you still talk to any of the old crowd?"

"Just Jenny," Dallas said. "We went to college together. She just got married to Rick."

"Really? God, they've been going out since pre-school!" Brian exclaimed.

"Pretty much," Dallas said. "She's still my best friend too. Who's yours?"

"Nick Carter," Brian said.

"You know what? I knew that," Dallas said. "I follow you guys. I can't help it."

"I'm glad," Brian said.

"What about that girl you were dating?" Dallas asked.

"Leigh Anne?" Brian asked. "We broke up a couple of months ago."

"Hey Brian," Dallas said, trying to ease the tension. "You've been away too long."

"I guess we have a lot of catching up to do," Brian said, holding Dallas' hand underneath the table.
