Anton Szandor LaVey was born on April 11, 1930. He died October 29, 1997, although his death certificate said he died on October 31. He was 67 years old when he died of a heart attack. LaVey was survived by his two estranged daughters, Zeena Schreck and Karla LaVey, and his son, Xerxes Satan LaVey.
The will Anton LaVey left cited Blanche Barton (his closest friend) as the new High Priestess of the Church of Satan, and Xerxes as the only other benefactor of his estate. Karla LaVey contested the will, attempting to gain complete control of the Church of Satan; Zeena Schreck wanted nothing to do with it as she had joined the Temple of Set previously. As far as I can tell, the court upheld Anton's will, and Karla formed her own Church (The First Satanic Church), which is apparently modelled on the theories LaVey presented and intended for the Church of Satan.
Anton LaVey claimed to work as a lion tamer for a circus, police photographer, criminologist, artist, and hypnotist. As a musician he played in the San Francisco Ballet orchestra at age 16--the youngest musician ever to be billed in that esteemable ensemble. In the 1950's he founded the Magic Circle, a fledgling occult group meant to be a discussion and exchange of intelligent occult views. On April 30, 1966, 1 Anno Satani was declared, and The Church of Satan was founded.
