Sir Elton John replaced Backstreet Boy AJ McLean in PITP 2000

The Backstreet Boys -- minus A.J. McLean -- and Sir Elton John perfomed together at London's Party in the Park 2000 at Hyde Park on Sunday (July 9) in front of more than 100,000 people.

Group member Kevin Richardson explained from the stage why McLean was not present at the concert. "As everyone may notice we’re missing one Backstreet Boy today," he said. "A.J. couldn’t be with us. We don’t want any rumors to get started, we’re not breaking up. We’re making a new album right now, but A.J. is back home in the United States. His grandfather just had very, very serious surgery, so he’s back home, with his grandfather right now." Richardson then jokingly noted, "But instead of having A.J., today we have E.J.!" The remaining Backstreet Boys performed "Philadelphia Freedom" and "Friends Never Say Goodbye" from Elton John's The Road To El Dorado soundtrack with Elton John, who was an honorary Backstreet Boy for the day. Meanwhile, "E.J." joined in on the group's "I Want It That Way" and "The One" from its multiplatinum album, Millennium.

All proceeds from the one-day festival went to the Prince's Trust, the charitable organization set up by Prince Charles. Performers at the annual Capital FM concert included Steps, Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi, Savage Garden, Ronan Keating, and Billie Piper, among others.

Another Backstreet Album in the Works

Source=All Pop.com

The Backstreet Boys should be in Sweden by now, working on the one thing their fans crave....a new album. The new BSB album, a follow-up to their hit "Millennium" is expected to be released in September and the boys are hoping to keep their eager fans occupied with an official photo book that's scheduled for release on July 5, MTV reports.

As AllPop reported last month, "The Official Backstreet Boys Photo Book" features photos from the past six years of the group's career and include snaps of A.J. taking a bath.

All the photos were taken by the group's official photographer, Andre Csillag and group member Howie Dorough told MTV that the boys had to be firm about certain things he wasn't allowed to capture on film. "When I go to the bathroom, I have to tell him that he can't come into the stall with me," Howie said. "He can't take pictures [there], 'cause this is a PG program.[Laughs] But he's really cool, though." Howie went on to say that he admires Andre's work and knows it probably isn't an easy job all of the time. "The poor guy, sometimes he has to every once in a while ask us, 'Okay, guys. We really need a group shot here.' It's hard to get all five of our attentions together when we're all off in La-La Land," Howie said., "and playing around and goofing around. But he does a very good job of capturing, as I said in the book, the last six years of our lives."

In more Backstreet news, the group's wild child, A.J., just launched his own, official website in support of his musical alter-ego Johnny No Name. The website features photos of A.J. when he's playing Johnny and a complete history on the birth of the fictitious singer. Earlier this year, A.J. toured as Johnny to support VH1's Save the Music campaign. But A.J. isn't the only Backstreet Boy with his own website. Howie also has a website which features recipes by his mom, Howie news, contests and information on The Caroline Dorough-Cochran Lupus Memorial Foundation that was established in memory of Howie's sister who died from Lupus.

A Backstreet Boy Wedding For Kevin Richardson

(6/22/00, 6 p.m. ET) - The Backstreet Boys' Kevin Richardson, 27, married his fiancee Kristin Willits, 29, on June 17 outside of Richardson's hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. The couple exchanged vows at Estill County Cathedral Domain.

"They're two good people," Kevin's brother Tim Richardson told the Lexington Herald Leader. "Remove all the glamour and the fact that he's a Backstreet Boy -- that they're in the entertainment industry -- they're just two people who love each other."

The couple met when they were both employed at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The other four Backstreet Boys -- Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, and A.J. McLean -- were all in attendance at the ceremony, reports a spokesperson for the band. Richardson announced his engagement to Willits earlier this year on Valentine's Day, the same day that his cousin and bandmate Littrell announced that he was engaged to actress Leighanne Wallace.

The Backstreet Boys head back to Cheiron Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, in early July with producer Max Martin to finish recording their next album, which is scheduled for a fall release. There are currently several tracks either written, co-written, or produced by the Backstreet Boys themselves that are being considered for the album.

Richardson recently told LAUNCH that he and the other Backstreet Boys have the utmost respect for the judgement of the producers they are working with in creating the follow-up to Millennium. "I mean, we want to get involved and write more, but at the same time we realize that it's a growing process. We don't want to just jump into it and say, 'OK, we're going to write this whole album ourselves,' because the producers we've been working with, we've learned a lot from them in the past four or five years that we've been recording and stuff," he said.

Meanwhile, Backstreet Boy Dorough is hosting his Lupus 2000 concert event Sunday (June 25) at the Groove on Universal Studios Citywalk in Orlando. Country singer John Michael Montgomery, Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean, Deborah Gibson, K5, the Nelson twins, comedian Wayne Brady, Irish singer Jerry Brown, actor Sherman Hemsley, and Dorough's sister Pollyanna will all join him at the event. In addition to the performances, an in-person silent auction will be held featuring items donated by various celebrities and local businesses.

Backstreet talks about 'N Sync
Source="http://www.allpop.com">All Pop's Backstreet Gallery

Rumours of a feud between the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync have been flying ever since the two groups took the spotlight, but the Backstreet members have finally taken some time to talk about it.

Since both bands were created by Louis J. Pearlman and both also went through legal trouble with the pop music heavyweight, it's not hard to understand why some similarities show up between 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys.

But the members of Backstreet are frustrated that some of their signature moves keep getting copied by 'N Sync, MTV reports.

"It's more frustrating on the creative side, like, who you choose to write music with, who you choose to work with and produce your record, who you choose to direct your videos," Kevin Richardson told MTV. "I mean, it's like, find your own identity."

One similarity between the two groups that annoys the Backstreet Boys is the flying technique during BSB concerts, which 'N Sync also uses.

"We remember, at the Billboard Awards in Vegas, that time when Garth (Brooks) flew out and we turned and we said, 'We Want to do that,' and then somebody else is doing it," Brian Littrell told MTV.

BSB Comes Out Empty at the Grammys 2000

Yup, hard to believe but true. The 'Boys came out empty-handed at the Grammys award, hosted by Rosie O'Donnell on February 23, 2000 (last Wednesday). Apparently every category they're nominated for, Santana was also nominated. It turned out that Santana beat Backstreet everytime and let the Backstreet fans down. However, fans could not be disappointed for long-the Boys had stepped on stage with thumbs up performances, and even reached the high point of the night's show by performing with Sir Elton John. Look for pictures and sound clips of the event later on this page.

Kevin Richardson is ALSO engaged to his girlfriend of 7 years. (!!!!!!) When asked why he decided to finally "take the plunge" Brian answered basically "We are so in love-- she's my only. It's time to move on and take a very important step in life" I am very happy for both of them. Well I just thought you might like to know that. also this info is completely true without a doubt--came straight from the guys.

Backstreet To The Rescue!

The Backstreet Boys are getting booked. Comic-booked, that is. The "Larger Than Life" boy band, already superstars for their poppy tunes, are about to become superheroes, thanks to comic god Stan Lee, the mastermind behind the likes of Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men and Fantastic Four.

This time, the fantastic Backstreet five--Howie, AJ, Nick, Kevin and Brian--will don capes, super-charged weapons and show off their superpowers in an upcoming comic series published in print form and on the Web.

"I'm ecstatic to be involved with Stan Lee," says Nick Carter, who is cocreating the series with Lee and whose comic alter ego will boast amazing ninja powers. "A comic book is something I've always wanted to do and we've finally made it happen."

The series kicks off February 19 with comic books sold exclusively at Backstreet Boys concerts and online at www.backstreetproject.com.

The plot of the comic series, according to Lee, involves aliens, babes and plenty of action. The setup: a spaceship crashes down during a BSB concert. Ever the heroes, the Boys rush to rescue "beautiful alien creature." The "curvaceous" visitor tells them they must protect Earth from an impending alien invasion. She gives them each an amulet that changes their DNA, empowering each Boy with superhuman skills--Nick becomes a fierce martial artist; Kevin gains incredible strength; Brian has amazing leaping ability; AJ turns into a weapons whiz; and Howie gets "mind-blowing" telepathic powers. (No word yet on whether BSB will use said powers to blow away their boy band rivals, 'N Sync.)

"We will use the comic book to introduce the superhero story to fans, so those fans not yet connected to the Internet can share in the excitement that is created by the animated Webisodes," says Lee. Adds Carter: "There are a lot of females in our audience. [Comics are] a really cool way to get guys involved."

And comic experts think the Backstreet Boys' marketing power could be a boon to the entire industry. "I think any comic that comes out that has the potential for bringing in new people is a good thing," says Andy Helfer, an editor at DC Comics, one of the industry's biggest players, whose signature character Superman can be seen online in animated Webisodes at Entertaindom.com.

Of course, making comic strips featuring celebs isn't really groundbreaking news. The grandfather of them all, says Helfer, is the original KISS comic that bowed in the late '70s. The story is that KISS went to the printer and dripped their own blood into the ink before the comc went to press. Hence the infamous tagline: "Printed with real KISS blood." Says Helfer of the monster rockers, "They are superheroes anyway."

Since then, DC Comics has had a Muhammad Ali and a Prince (before he was The Artist Formerly Known As) strip; Marvel made Alice Cooper a two-dimensional character; Todd McFarlane, Spawn's creator, has an updated KISS quarterly and a one-shot Ozzy Osbourne book; and Image Comics publishes a Wu-Tang Clan series.

But not all acts translate into comic hits. "A lot of [these kind of] comics only work if the act is at the top," Helfer says. "You need to be sure the band will still be at the top when the comic comes out."

Backstreet at Junos

TORONTO -- Canadian Backstreet Boys fans will be sure to tune into the 2000 Juno awards on March 12.

Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean will be in the audience for the music awards. The Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" is nominated in the Best Selling Album category.

In more pop news, Prozzak has also been nominated for Best Single ("Sucks To Be You"), best album ("Hot Show"), best video ("Strange Disease"), and Best New Group.

To top it all off, The Moffatts will be hosting the Junos, and Boomtang Boys, McMaster & James and soulDecision will be performing during a special pre-show concert.

The two-hour awards show will be aired on CBC Television starting at 8 p.m. (EST).

'The Backstreet Project' details revealed'
Source: All Pop

By now, every Backstreet Boys fan in the world knows that there's a new Backstreet comic coming soon.

"The Backstreet Project" is being created by Stan Lee ("Spiderman") and Nick Carter (the blond Backstreet Boy, of course!).

Here's what we knew before:
1. A special, introductory edition of the comic will be available at BSB's concerts starting Feb. 19th
2. "The Backstreet Project" will be an animated series on the Web.

Now we know the comic's plot. The super-hero adventures start when the Backstreet Boys are in the middle of a concert. A spaceship crashes next to their stadium and a beautiful alien crawls out while the boys rush to help her.

They quickly learn that the alien is trying to protect Earth from an alien invasion. Each group member is given a magical amulet filled with "mystic crystals".

When the boys wear the amulets, their DNA swirls together and gives them each super powers.

Each member has a different super power. AJ - becomes an expert with any weapon and wears futuristic armour with two laser blasters Nick - gains Ninja powers, becomes a skilled martial artist, and carries a razor-sharp sword Kevin - becomes super-strong Brian - has the best jump in the world. He can leap over buildings and can create a "mystic ball of energy that resembles a basketball". Howie - gains amazing telepathic powers and can create three-dimensional illusions to confuse his enemies.

You can see what your favourite Backstreet Boy will look like in comic book form by going to Backstreet's official website .

Backstreet Online
Source: All Pop

The Backstreet boys are planning to webcast some of their upcoming concerts. The boys will be showing a pay-per-view webcast of their "Into The Millennium" North American tour, Dotmusic reports. The web package will include interviews with the group members and backstage footage.

The webcast is scheduled to take place in March with MCY.com. Officials from MCY.com think the five crooners might be able to top Paul McCartney's webcast that earned 50 million hits last year.
