Experiments in Brass I
I've been going through my old songs and instrumental pieces in an attempt
to catalog everything and to pull out particularly good stuff for further
work or to put up on my web page. The other night, I ran across this piece.
Like a lot of instrumental pieces I was working on at the time (1986-7), it's
really just an experiment in harmony, tension and release, and various degrees
of tonality and lack thereof. At first these pieces were strictly based on
twelve-tone rows or other technical criteria. Then I got to where I could
find the kinds of harmonic issues I was looking for in a more direct fashion
without needing other more artificial means of crossing the "abyss of
freedom" as Schoenberg, I think it was, so aptly referred to it.
