If you thought the Michael Jackson / Lisa Marie TV interview got a lot of attention, consider the Jackson billboard on the side of the Seattle Mercer Tower Records store. First there was a "non" controversy stirred up by irresponsible television reporters who made a huge issue about Tower cutting down a couple of trees (the reporters didn't bother to find out that the city granted a permit and the trees will eventually be replanted). Then someone painted a penis (the only one Lisa Marie will see) on the poster, which was quickly covered. And then on the night of July 8, someone spray painted "Foo Fighters" under the list of "special guests". Though this sort of vandalism/enthusiasm happens all the time in rock'n'roll (remember the old wall of the Vogue?), Tower employees were shocked to find a Polaroid negative stuck under their door that showed Dave Grohl painting the graffiti. Seems Grohl was out late with a few friends, closing down a bar, and since his wife is a huge Micheal Jackson fan, he thought it would be funny. Tower manager Bob Zimmerman thought it was a kick and said there were no hard feelings (the billboard was cleaned the next day). Grohl used to work for both Tower and Zimmerman in Washington, DC, and Zimmerman assured Grohl that "after what he's done, in no way will Tower ever consider hiring him back". Considering that the Foo Fighters album is one of the fasting selling NW records in years, Dave probably won't need the job anyway. The Jackson billboard is up through the end of July.
