Into Dust is a song about the sudden destruction of a relationship. It all happens so fast, and she can't believe it's still happening and still sinking in that it's all over. (Still falling) She starts to blame herself, deciding it's her fault she means nothing to him (Worthless and on begin...inside me today) They had become so close, almost as if they were one being, when all of a sudden they're "broken in two" and all she has now is her own identity. His eyes "shed into dust" and he can't even see now what he saw in her then, "like 2 strangers". After they shared so much all they can do is shake hands and leave, but that gives her the closure she needed. She knows that she'll be okay on her own ('Til a handshake shook away the fear) She isn't sure if she's better off with or without him now (I could possibly be fading or have something more to gain) but she knows how dependent she'd become. She felt herself "growing colder", losing her feelings. She could feel herself "under his fate" so ready to make his every decision crucial to her life. She remembers how he had captivated her so (It was you breathless and tall) but then her own eyes finally turned into dust as well.
