Well first a couple of impressions, now that I know what's being said: WOW, what a powerful piece of music...I had always enjoyed the song before but it was to much work to listen to the words closely because of the overpowering instruments and the feedback, echos, etc.

Some highly personal ideas....Hope is singing about her relationship with David and the difficulties they were having. Verse 1 line 1 is an obvious reference to Jimi Hendrix ('cuse me while I kiss the sky). 'Cuse me, come up (join jimi) crash with the muses (jimi, jim morrison, etc,). The whole song is trippy with ideas flowing in and out just like Jimi's music.

verse 1 she is telling David you had your chance but you have lost me but I don't want you to lose me. I find the dark (depression big time, we've all had that) but you can stop me from sinking into it , find me and take me to your heart. Let me hold you tight....rain controls us ( when it rains you do different things, dress differently, behave differently...rains causes this, that is, controls you) as Hope wants to cling to david, bring some sunshine to me on a rainy day. Also Hope mixes the use of singular and plural on certain words, I think on purpose, for dramatic effect and to shift from past to present tense.

Verse 2 their love is doomed but hers refuses to die, but David, you could free Hope from her anquish. Maybe someone still likes her (as elusive as the wind). Its there but you can't catch it. That special some one is there but can you connect? If you connect will it work or will it be like David and Hope? Awesome verse, there is much more here then I am saying.

Verse 3 (in the present tense) she has found the dark but cries out to him once more. And by verse 4 it has all ran together, her seach, her love, her lost. "With one look becomes with good luck"...sort of bittersweet or ironic she found the dark (depression) which she did not want. With the explosion of women in rock as singer/songwriters/performers I believe that Hope Sandoval is the best currently in the business. Her lyrics border on brilliant and her performances are understated but overflowing with emotion and feeling. Eat your heart out Jewel and Sheryl. I could say much more but this should be enough to get everyone thinking about the song and its meaning. As you can see, I see and feel music on a highly personal level which is how Mazzy Star writes and performs.

Closing comments: On my degree of confidence in the transcription I am in doubt on only a couple of words which even enhanced could be heard in more then one way depending on the listener. In those cases I went for contextual meaning from my perspective. An example in verse 2 line 3 the word "flesh" could be heard as "flash" but it doesn't fit as well. It was also difficult to to pick out light and lights sometimes but it doesn't affect the song.
