I think that Take Everything, whether consciously written this way or not, is about the relationship David and Hope used to share.....As David calls the music he writes "Cinema of the mind", I believe it's the soundtrack to their sad unfortunate breakup (as is all the rest of their music to some degree)......God, I feel so bad for him. Now judging that I think that Take Everything is about their breakup, because they certainly don't tell us what their songs are about, they both share their views and reflections, of course Hope in words, David in music.....and then of course, Hope's boyfriend William Reid (I greatly admire his music as well) plays on the song. How sad. I don't know many details about their breakup, but talk about taking everything. The man who figuratively took everything from David plays on the song, and Hope aptly named the song Take Everything (or maybe David did), even though she doesn't necessarily feel all that bad for him (in my opinion), and possibly wrote the lyrics from the opposite perspective, she was the one took everything from David and gave it to William....yet maybe that means she does feel bad for him. I think that Hope feels that David took everything from her too. Just the lyrics "Are you alright/just because I wanna know/do you still become last night with clear eyes all pale/you never got there even though you say you will/sorry now that you've fallen from my eyes/that's the truth" make me wonder if Hope feels as bad as David does about it. It seems that Hope feels betrayed by David, maybe broken promises or not being able to deal with fundamental aspects of David's personality. So then William enters with his small solo in the middle of the song, and then it's obvious that after William's ethereal feedback laden presence is known, David's guitar parts start to get more desperate and emotional. He's heart broken over Hope and somewhat angry that William has taken his place at her side. Just listen to that slide solo at the end, is that not one of the most desperate, telling, emotional solos ever? That's what I get from this song, and that's why it's one of my favorite songs.
