Citizen King

3 September 1998, 7:30-8:30pm, Halas Field

Citizen King is: DJ Brooks -- drums Dave Cooley -- keyboards Malcolm Michiles -- turntables Kristian Riley -- guitar Matt Sims -- vocals, bass

Hailing from the rusty, crusty streets on the east side of Milwaukee, Citizen King has honed its sonic pastiche into a strangely engaging collage of broken teeth, brass knuckles and Dollar Store tales that has earned the quintet an impressive following across a wide swath of the post-industrial Midwest.

Now, Citizen King is poised to take their meaty, beaty bouillabaisse worldwide with Mobile Estates, their major label debut release for Warner Bros. Records, set to drop in early 1999. Produced by the CK's own Dave Cooley and Matt Sims, along with Eric Valentine of Dwarves, Third Eye Blind, Paris and Smash Mouth renown, Mobile Estates defies all convenient categories and formulaic formats. The album draws its sample-textured inspiration in part from the visionary group's curious collection of over 20,000 vintage vinyl records, stored in a specially fabricated vault in Bionic, their downtown Milwaukee recording studio.

Citizen King's previous contributions to the recording art are chronicled on three early indie releases (recently taken out of print) which established the group as one of the most exciting bands plying the club and college circuit since its inception in 1993. After a year-long hibernation at Bionic creating the new album, Citizen King will be on the road this fall in an extensive run- up tour to the release of Mobile Estates. Audiences for the nationwide college and club dates will be treated to a mixtape from CK turntablist Malcolm Michiles, featuring a twisted litter of selected Mobile Estates tracks and assorted other rarities, available for a buck only at the shows.
