Chapter Eleven

Walking over to the sleeping men, Robbie laid his hands on the forehead of the unconscious man and began to look into the dreams and terrors that filled him. Jezzy walked over to them and sat at his feet watching the scene unfold. Taking a deep breath, she began to reach out with her mind to see what was happening between the two joined men. Distant screams and the growing smell of smoke startled the young girl. In her mind she looked down toward her hands and saw them covered in blood, looking closer she saw that all around her was blood and death. The screams of the dying filling her ears and the smell of rotting and burning flesh flooded her senses. The sounds of wailing soon filled her ears and with a shake from a warm hand she came back to herself and found that it was she that was crying and wailing. Opening her eyes, she found herself staring into the eyes of the companion. He was shaking her and calling to her to wake up. As consciousness returned to her she blinked and nodded to the companion. As he realized that she was now aware of herself and the surroundings he asked, "who is that, what is he doing to mark? Why is it that when I touched him he didn't move? What is going on here?" Shaking her head to remove the last remnants of the vision she reached her hand out to the companion and patted his arm reassuringly. Gently nudging him back to his bed she tried to sooth him. Placing her hand to her lips she motioned for his silence and then smiled at her friend who was still joined to Marcus. Then looking back at the companion she smiled again and shook her head to leave them alone.

"No, I will not be quiet," said the companion. The worry and panic in his voice were evident, "I want to know what is going on and who that is with Mark." Sighing in resignation the young girl pushed the companion back down onto the bundle, took a deep breath and spoke for the first time. "That is my friend and he is trying to help Marcus, but you must leave them be now." Shock registered on the companions face as he took in the fact that she could speak, and that her voice was so beautiful.

"You, you can speak," he stammered. Smiling with amusement she replied, "well yes of course I can speak." Looking toward Robbie again she knew that there was no going back now so there was no point in hiding anymore either. "I have simply chosen not to speak for a long time. There is hardly ever a need to and so I don't. But since you are here, awake, and are now demanding answers I suppose that I will have to speak now won't I."

"Who are you?" the companion asked hesitantly. "A friend nothing more and nothing less," she answered cryptically. With a secretive smile at the companion, "you must understand that I have nothing but your best interests at heart." A look of deep sadness and pain then covered her smile as she said, " I only wanted to help you both but now there are things happening beyond my control and what was once simply the desire to help you has put everyone in grave danger. That is why I asked my friend to come and help. We must wake you friend and break the terrors that he is trapped in so that you both can leave here. I must get you two back to your people and safely away from mine before you are discovered."

"So you are one of them." the look of shock and horror that crossed his face cut through her like a knife. "No," came a voice from across the room. Both turned to look at Robbie and saw his anger clearly written on his face. "No she is not one of us," he replied in disgust. "She is who she is. You should be ashamed of yourself, she has only offered you kindness and protection and you return that with horror, fear and prejudice. I should kill you now for your transgressions."

"Please, no. Robbie, stop, it is all right. I understand where this comes from and it is all right." The young girl stood then between the two angry men silently pleading for them to stop. Tearing his angry gaze from the companion he looked gently to the young girl, "as you wish my lady." he said with a smile. Ignoring the companion altogether he spoke to her mind, "he will be alright. There is nothing more than a wounded pride inside him. It is healing and he shall wake soon, I promise. Will you be all right though. I can't stand to see what these dwellers do to you. I don't want you hurt anymore. Let me take them from here so that they can do you no more harm, please." "Thank you Robbie but no. I brought them here I will take them from here, they are my responsibility and I will see to them." she silently returned to him and then smiled.

The companion knew that something was happening though he couldn't tell what. All he could tell was that the young girl had managed to calm the wild beast of a man who still loomed over Marcus. Trying to get a better look at the beast across from him he found that the harder he looked at him the less detail he could notice. Then with shock he knew what was sitting there before him. He is a..."

"Yes boy, I am. I am one of the shades of the forest you and your kind so fear. And with good reason too, for if this girl had not begged for you life and your friends, you would not be hear studying me at this moment. So you should be thankful to her for I understand that this is the second time she had spared your lives. Remember that the next time you seek to judge her, for she is more forgiving than I or the others like me will ever be." And with the words he stood up and walked to the mouth of the cave. Jezzy followed after him to say her goodbye's and thanks. As they stood in the mouth of the cave, she reached out her hand to Robbie. "I'm so sorry," she thought. "I didn't think again, did I? Oh why do I keep doing this?" Turning toward her he smiled down on her gently, "Oh Jezzy, my dear sweet girl, don't worry about me I'm old and I can handle this. It's you that I worry about, you are so young and frail. You have so little experience with these types. Just be careful and remember that I am with you always, call to me if you need me please. Promise me that you will call to me for anything."

With a fierce look in his eye he stared at her until she replied, "I promise, Robbie. I promise." and with that he left.
