Without a TV, Jewel Kilcher had to find other ways to entertain herself while growing up in Alaska. Music, yodeling and poetry were natural pas- times till she was old enough to land a job -- OK, a few jobs -- in California. After being fired a couple times, she lived in her van on a diet of carrots and peanut butter and strummed her guitar. She grooved in a San Diego coffeehouse with her angelic vocals and sparse acoustics until Atlantic Records released Pieces Of You with the thinking-girl's single, "Who Will Save Your Soul?"
