Without a TV, Jewel Kilcher had to
find other ways to entertain herself
while growing up in Alaska. Music,
yodeling and poetry were natural pas-
times till she was old enough to land
a job -- OK, a few jobs -- in California.
After being fired a couple times, she
lived in her van on a diet of carrots
and peanut butter and strummed her
guitar. She grooved in a San Diego
coffeehouse with her angelic vocals
and sparse acoustics until Atlantic
Records released Pieces Of You with
the thinking-girl's single, "Who Will
Save Your Soul?"
