Emerging from Canada comes a new label that is sure to bring its country another legendary outfit in their electronic music lineage, judging by the first release. For their inaugaural showing, Woodwork enlists the hard working Sunkissed, veteran of Definitive Records and over 50 worldwide live performances. Sunkissed appeared on “Utopia- The Big Chill” compilation from the Dutch Ambient Foundation. The worldwide press has also noticed him, as he was written up in Muzik Magazine. Noteworthy live performances include Austria’s “Steirischer Herbst” festival, and will be returning for their Peace Parade ’98. He also played at the Winter Electronic Music Festival this year. What better an act could Woodwork find to open with?

SUNKISSED (Woodwork 001, CANADA)
The first aspect of this record that jumps out at you is the quality. Labels want to make a statement with their first release, and Woodward definitely accomplishes that. As the needle makes its way into the center of things, you notice the depth of the music. “Beacon” sends out a signal so that you can find your way to it. It builds almost unnoticed, seemingly minimal if you weren’t listening intently. Smooth. The techno-house movement is really showing its might with some insanely proficient producers. The elastic techno melodies remind me of those of Astral Matrix. “Projection” reminds me of Astral Matrix as well, though this one may be TOO deep for the dancefloor. “Ascent” is a little more dancefloor compatible- getting into some tribal in fact. “Aquamarine” taps into a darker source now and then, as the groove continues on somehow. Overall I really dig this release, it’s definitely a journey. It may be too deep and chill for most dancefloors, but if played in the right environment these tracks will shine. I’m looking forward to the harder EP. [Bliss]
