Interview with: Resonance
Records
(from Activated 4- June 96)
Florida's dance music scene is big! With many
clubs that consistently pack to capacity for every event. The names are
also big: The Edge and The Firestone just to name a few. Djs with clout-
Icey, Kimball Collins, D-Love, Baby Anne, Three, Chris Fortier, etc. If
anyone knows the score, they know that Florida's musical selection is (for
the most part) more commercial European clubby house, with the exception
of Rabbit in the Moon, of course. Florida is also the home of a semi-new
label called Resonance Records. Their musical weapons of choice- Ambient
and Trance. Bliss conducted this interview with Thomas Penton and Luis
Duran via the US Postal Service.
Please explain the vision behind
Resonance Records... what made you choose the start your own label?
T: We just had the
idea one day and tried it. Luckily it worked for us. I wouldn't say there's
a vision behind R.R., we just wanted to do good music.
L: Resonance came
about from one day to another, it was a spontaneous decision to start it.
I don't think there's a vision per se, but freedom and self-expression
were #1 on my list.
What influences would you say have
manifested themselves into your music?
T: John Carpenter,
Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Eurythmics, Rush, etc.
L: Europe, Europe,
Europe, Europe...Too much since the 80's to mention. The old EyeQ, Harthouse,
and some indusrial too.
Where do you get most of your musical
ideas from? (example: sounds heard in other songs, melodies that popped
in your head, or just from experimentation with your equipment).
T: Usually an idea
or concept will pop in my head and I would just take it from there.
L: That's a little
hard to answer on paper, it's unpredictable-- when it comes, it comes.
There is an ambient element present
in a lot of your songs...is this another passion?
T: Ambient is probably
my true passion, it gives me more freedom than anything. We'll have an
ambient album coming out soon on Music Research, a German label, titled
Passage.
L: I guess i like
a little more soul and movement behind the driving beat. I don't want it
to be just aerobics material, stuff that you can listen to in the car or
whatever because it gets pretty or dark and emotional at times, and I think
that's what i enjoy the most when i lay down a track.
What do you think is the major differenes/similarities
between European and American styles of trance?
T: What American
styles of trance? I can't think of anyone else who does what we do in the
states.
L: Well, I consider
American trance to be a kickback of what Germans pioneered, but Europeans
seem to love American music. I really can't nail it, it's just good fucking
music from both sides.
Where do you see electronic music
heading in the future?
T: It seems to be
stuck in a revolving circle. Hopefully it will become more musical-- sophisticated,
and hopefully this old-school shit will wear out!
L: Electronic music
has been evolving for so long that it's practically impossible to predict
its future. But wherever it's headed you can bet i'll still be doing it.
What kind of response are you getting
on your stuff?
T: Everyone seems
to really like it, and they seem surprised to see this sound out of the
states.
Lnd intelligent feedback,
surprised responses about where we're from,a nd the stage in music in which
we are still producing trance and acid.
Do you have any plans for remixing
(either your own tracks or tracks from other labels?
T: Our first release
"HALO" had a song called W on it. We're going to make a '96 version
soon and release it. I'm eager to make it myself.
L: Yeah, we have
been thinking of remixing W for an upcoming HALO, but nothing yet on other
artist remixes.
Any plans to do live P.A.'s?
T: None at the moment,
but i would love to.
L: Not at the moment,
we're a little busy producing stuff in the studio, but very soon.
Are either of you involved in any
side projects?
T: We have a 12"
on Undercover Music US coming out soon called "Orca". Also a
full length ambient CD called Passage on Music Research (Germany). And
possibly some more trance material on Polytox out of Germany.
