Chapter 10

Everyone had gone home except for Kevin after Annie broke down. She was asleep now, but Kevin wanted to stay just in case she decided to beat on somebody again, Brian was a small man and Kevin didn't think he could handle that. Of course, he didn't tell Brian that, he said he would stay just to keep him company.
"Kev, what do you think she meant by it was her fault?" Brian asked.
Kevin thought for a minute, "To tell you the truth I have no idea where she even came up with that. How could she think it was her fault?"
"Maybe it was something those doctors said to her, before I got there," he said, anger seeping into his voice, "If they told her it may have been her fault, I'll kill them."
"Just calm down a minute, Brian. I doubt they would tell her that, why would they accuse her in the first place? She's not a bad mother. They have no reason to believe she's the cause, unless..." Kevin trailed off.
"Unless what?"
"What if they know something we don't?"
Brian rolled his eyes, "That's ridiculous! You're making this sound like some sort of unsolved mystery or something. 'Something we don't we know,' where do you come up with this stuff?" Brian said and got up at the sound of the doorbell.
"Hey, well a tleast I didn't accuse the doctors!" Kevin called after him.
Brian returned to the living room with a large white envelope in his hand, "That was believable," he said, taking his seat across from Kevin.
"What's that?" he asked, referring to the envelope.
"I don't know, it's addressed to Annie," Brian said, holding the envelope up to the light.
"Who's it from?"
"Well, it's from the hospital, if you must know, Mr. Nosy."
"Shut up... so are you going to open it?"
"You think I should open her mail? She'll kill me if I do," Brian concluded and placed the envelope next to him on the couch.
"You're not opening her mail, it's from the hospital, right? Well, what if it's about Anthony. Remember they said that they were sending the autopsy reports to you as soon as possible."
"Kev, you're a genius! Look, it's from the doctor that worked on him too," Brian ripped open the package and took out the stationary that matched the envelope it came in.
Kevin watched him intently as Brian read over the letter, he watched as his expression turned from relieved to confusion to pure rage.
"I can't believe this!" Brian yelled, standing up.
"What?"
"I'm so freakin' mad right now, it's not even funny. How in the fucking world did this happen?" he asked himself, running a hand through his hair.
"How could what happen?" an obviously ignored, Kevin asked.
"I'll be back, I need to leave before I do something I'll regret!" Brian stormed out of the house and slammed the door. Kevin heard a car door slam, then Brian screech out of the parking lot.
"Ok, what was that?" Kevin asked himself, then spotted the letter. He picked it up off the floor and read it himself. "What the hell..." his mouth dropped open when he finished reading it.
"Hey, Kev. What was all that yelling?" Annie asked, yawning.
Kevin threw the letter at her, "That!"
She pushed her hair behind her ear, "What? Why are you so mad?" she asked. She had no idea why Kevin was so mad. She bent down and picked up the letter
"What is this?"
"Why don't you just read it yourself?" he spat at her.
"Okay..." she said, not getting the attitude Kevin was giving her. She figured something about that letter had gotten him so upset. What was it?
"Oh, no," she breathed after reading it.
"Exactly my thoughts!"
"Kevin, please, just tell me... d-did Brian read t-this?" she asked on the verge of tears.
"That should be the least of your problems, but yes he did! He was pretty upset when he read it too and if I were him, I wouldn't come back. Don't expect him to," Kevin said grabbing his jacket and went out the door. Leaving Annie alone.
"Oh God, how did this happen?" she asked herself. "I've lost the man I love for sure and all because of this stupid letter!" she cried, violently ripping the letter into shreds until she couldn't anymore.
