First of all, I must credit my admiring the Backstreet Boys to my dear friend Mary. Whenever I am/was with her, she was either singing their songs, listening to them, or talking about them. One day she mentioned the fact that Brian had just recently had open heart surgery, and she was wondering if he was okay. This immediately caught my attention. I asked her to tell me more about Brian's condition. She said that he was born with a hole in his heart, but it was not detected until he got an infection that attacked his heart and that he had almost died because of the infection. Now, he was recovering from surgery to correct the problem.

After that I started paying attention to their music and views on certain topics. The reason that I was so intrigued was the fact that I was born with congenital heart disease. I too have a hole in my heart along with a condition called Coartation of the Aorta. I have had open heart surgery twice in my short 18 years of life. The experience has given me a higher sense of appreciation for life, and everyday that I am able to view the blue sky I thank God. I have come out of this journey, though it is still unfolding, a stronger willed person. I feel a strange connection with Brian because of our similar hurdles we have had to overcome.

The more I know about the Backstreet Boys, the more I come to realize that they represent the positive, and more overlooked, side to the music industry. They help set the standard for other musicians to follow, and they send a message that values, sincerity, and honesty, along with the grace of God, bring your success. The Backstreet Boys touch many lives. From young ages to an older more mature audience base, the Backstreet Boys bring people together not only in celebration of music, but in celebration of life through donating their time to charities and other benefits to help those in need. I am not nor do I want to be considered an obsessed fan. I am an admirer of their music, spirit and attitudes. One day I only hope to meet them and tell them that their courage and capacity for life is not overlooked. Remember to make each day count, and God bless you.
