When not performing onstage with Journey, you can usually find Steve with his drumsticks in his hand. He received his first drum kit at 11 and decided to become a professional drummer.
After graduating high school, he attended the famed Berkelee School of Music where he studied classical and jazz. He joined Jean-Luc Ponty in 1976, then went on to perform with Ronnie Montrose. In 1979, Aynsley Dunbar left Journey and Steve (who met the band during a tour when Montrose opened for Journey was asked to join.
Anyone who has seen Steve perform live soon realizes they are experiencing rock musics premier drummer. In addition to playing with Journey, Steve plays and records with his own jazz group, Vital Information, performing at small clubs around the country. Steve plays piano also and lists Jon Bonham and Steve Gadd as his favorite drummers.
