Human Drama
14,384 Days Later

Triple X Records

Jane's Addiction, Guns and Roses, and Human Drama. It's hard to believe, but each of these bands came from the same scene - playing The Scream in L.A. all those years ago. Of the three bands, Human Drama definitely has gotten the least attention. That's unfortunate, because Johnny Indovina and the band really have a lot to offer, and 14,384 Days Later is the proof. It serves as a great reminder of just how appealing this band can be. And it sounds amazing for a live album, recorded December 21, 1996.

Tight, theatrical songwriting and passionate delivery is the forte, no matter what the vehicle used to get there. Sometimes it's a heavily distorted guitar line twisting in the background, sometimes it's static flute drawing the listener's attention, and sometimes it's the contrast of both elements. "I Bleed For You" and "Through My Eyes" offer a great comparison, showing the versatility of the band and the songwriting. "Through My Eyes" relies on one principal guitar riff to drive it - everything else in the instrumentation supports it in the background. "I Bleed For You," however, passes the theme of the song around to different players, each of whom puts their own stamp on it. I'm not sure many bands nowadays could pull off this kind of music in the studio, much less live.

The focal point of the music is, however, always Johnny Indovina's voice and the lyrics. Amongst the marble-mouthed golden throats populating grunge and (ahem) alternative music these days, it's refreshing to hear a singer I can understand. Okay, so he gets a little overwrought sometimes, especially on "I Keep a Close Watch" and "This Tangled Web." The band doesn't try to hide it. They are called Human Drama, after all. Surprisingly enough, the whole thing ends with a cover of Lou Reed's "Heroin," and again Indovina's voice sounds perfect. (Repeat after me, Lou, "The rain in Spain...") That sums up 14, 384 Days Later - surprisingly good. Who'd have thought that in 1998, the band making the best music from the Scream scene would be Human Drama.
