No not the festival but the one they performed after the gig with us at the surf club in the early hours.We jammed for a bit and then embarked on a ten m nute version of Get it on as the Damned did with Bolan themselves in Portsmouth in 1977. Then burst into a previously unrehearsed version of Love Song and then one of our songs Squeeze until I break it.A night not to be forgotten. What I've found interesting is that journalists always tend to consider Damned***, Phantasmagoria and Machine as their career highlights but here on the Guestbook 80% of the fans (included myself) consider Black Album as their best. I am sorry that Dave, Rat and Capt. will never get together again for the reasons we all know. They were a perfect musical unit!

I remember sitting in Goverment class back in 1977 reading a Rock Scene or some sort of music magazine like that, and the pages were covered with the new scene going on in England at the time. The band that grabbed my attention wasn't the Sex Pistols, but The Damned. I just wanted to be there in that new and exciting passion instead of here with the crappy "disco" scene! Well, a few years later I finally bought my first import LP of The Damned. It was Machine Gun Etiquette. I have been hooked ever since. I m glad I stumbled across this site. I saw The Damned play at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, Calif. on 12/12/85. I still have the ticket stub. We were the first ones in line, as it was general admission, and we ran up to the stage when they opened the doors. Dave Vanian w s right in front of me during the concert. I'll never forget it. The day before I got the whole band to sign my Phantasmagoria album at a record signing in Huntington Beach, as well as have my picture taken with Dave Vanian. I fronted a new wave band called The Infra Red Helicopters in 1978, and we played at a club called "Bones" in Reading. We were supporting The Doomed, little knowing that it was The Damned during their "break". To say this was the greatest thing to happen to me is an understatement and sharing a dressing room with Messrs Vanian, Sensible, Scabies and Badowski is still my happiest memory. If Vanian remembers playing that "pointing in the air and grabbing my balls trick" then would he let me now. Gods, the lot of them and this site is the dogs bollocks too!!

The best time for scoring at Damned gigs was the phantasmagoria era, suddenly the audience was made up of 75% big hair goth women getting all hot and bothered over Vanians body. I saw them at Clouds in Edinburgh in'78-there were about 20 people at the gig! before the gig, they let us into their dressing room and talked with us, passed round beer and wine, and Captain Sensible sprayed us with cider or beer, cant remember which. Nice site, right up to date more or less. I Have also dabbled with this internet thing and done my own...check it out. Although it mostly details the early Damned as part of my tribute to the original punk movement. Like it or lump it. And yes, the rumours are correct, I don't like goths.

The Damned is my favorite band of all time. David Vanian is my idol. The Damned kicked major ass from 1979 onward. I also love the Phantom Chords. after seeing the damned play at Leeds the other night it stryck me what a parody of their former glory they now are,either get Rat back in and write some new stuff,or concentrate on the solo stuff.It's not as if they're selling out venues,is it now?as Joh no said the other night,"Nobody wants them anymore"and who can truly disagree?I for one am sick of seeing them play the same old stuff,year after year.There used to be a time when 'Smash it Up'would have the whole venue going mad,nowadays about 20-30 peop e perform an arthritic hop-give it a rest!
