Frequently Asked Questions

If there's a question that has not been addressed, please e-mail me (eastercat@yahoo.com).

I have a web site, will you list it?

Yes. Make sure that the content is R.E.M.-related. Even if you've got a poem that says how much you loathe and despise R.E.M., I will list it. If your band once opened for R.E.M., I'll list the band's web site. It it's about or related to R.E.M., I will list it. Make sure to include an URL (e.g., www.yahoo.com) and, if you want, a description of the site. I may have a question to ask, so please make sure I can e-mail you.

I need to find a web site with lyrics, tablature, . . .

Think of this site as a scaled down version of Yahoo. We provide you with pointers, by giving descriptions of the sites. If none of the sites have what you're looking for, it may not exist. Or we may not have heard of it. This may be a good time for you to start that web site.
Also, there are a lot of sites listed on the web page. I don't remember what is on every site. I have to read the descriptions--just like everybody else.

How do I get in touch with R.E.M./the fanclub?

P.O. Box 8032
Athens, GA 30603

If you want a reply, please include a S.A.S.E. (self addressed stamped envelope). People outside the United States of America, need to include one of the following: international reply coupon, American stamps, or one dollar (american currency).

How do I join the fan club?

You can either join via the band's web site (see below) or send the fan club money. A one year membership is: $10 for American residents; $12 for everyone else. For what it's worth, you get a pretty good deal. You get the holiday (around Hanukkah, Xmas, Kwanzaa) package. The package comes with the famous single. Usually, the single is vinyl; occasionally, it might be a video or CD. You'll also receive the periodical newsletters and a little promotional item for the latest album.

Does R.E.M. have an official web site?

http://www.remhq.com. You can renew your membership, get the latest news, buy merchandise, and do other R.E.M.-related things.

How do I call/fax/e-mail R.E.M./the fanclub?

I can't give information that I don't possess. I don't know the band; don't associate with them; don't talk to them; don't keep in touch with them; or do anything resembling passing familiarity with them.

Why did you start this site?

Actually, the site was started by Barbara Jarvis. Back in the early days of the public internet (mid '80s to early '90s), a friend said that there wasn't more than ten web pages about R.E.M. She decided to prove him wrong and managed to find twenty or thirty web pages. The friend was impressed, as was Barbara. She figured that other fans may not want to expend the effort it took to find all these sites, so she listed the sites in a centralized location.
Yahoo did eventually come out and was pretty much the directory for web pages. Oddly enough, there wasn't a category for R.E.M.--so the Archive stayed up. Eventually, Yahoo caved in and gave R.E.M. their own category.
Unfortunately, Barb found out she would have to move to some backwoods area of Oregon. That meant she didn't know if she could even find an ISP (internet service provider), so she was set to just dump the site altogether. I offered to take over in 1997 and have continued to maintain the site.
