BOOKS
The Killers Among Us: An Examination of Serial Murder and Its Investigation
(1998), Prentice-Hall, Inc. by Steven A. Egger, $19.95 trade paperback
The book provides the reader with an overview of the phenomenon of serial
homicide in Part 1 by addressing definitions, motivational theories, who
these killers are, the victims of serial killers, and serial murder as a
media growth industry. In discussing the victims Egger describes the
victims of serial killers as the "Less-Dead" since they were less-alive -
coming from marginal group of our society such as vagrants, migrant workers,
prostitutes, runaway children, homeless, homosexuals, and hospital patients.
Part II present four case studies fo John W. Gacy, Henry Lee Lucas, Ted
Bundy, and the Hillside Stranglers with concluding chapter on comparing
these four killers. Part III deals with the investigation of serial murder
and discusses the problems of serial murder investigation followed by an
explanation of fourteen different police responses to serial murder. In
highlighting the major problems in investigating a serial murder Egger
places "linkage Blindness" as the number one problem. Linkage blindness is
the lack of sharing of information on unsolved homicide between police
jurisdictions frequently leaving the police blind to patterns of the
killings across jurisdictions. Part IV of the book discusses the future of
research into serial murder, the future of serial murder investigation, and
an extensive case study of Jeffrey Dahmer.
