John Foxx

John Foxx started out as the frontman and main man, for that matter, of Ultravox back in the 70s when it was still called Ultravox! with the !. The band was an interesting punk-like group back then, but by the time they reached their third album (and final with Foxx) they had developed quite a different sound. Not only did it presage later Ultravox successes with Midge Ure in songs like "The Quiet Man" (which sounds so much like a later Ultravox song that you almost don't believe it's Foxx instead of Ure) and the also presaged the solo career of John Foxx himself, in songs like "Dislocation" which clearly point towards Metamatic. Although John Foxx never hit the charts the same way contemporaries like Gary Numan did, or even his former band Ultravox did, he was an extremely respected and influential musician and Metamatic, reviewed here, is considered an electronic classic.
