Red Flag

Red Flag is one of the links between 80s new wave and 90s synthpop. When they first hit the scene in the late 80s, the "modern synthpop" movement wasn't even around yet, of course. But New Wave dance music was very much in evidence, and Red Flag tapped very heavily from that genre, especially from Depeche Mode. It seems, at times, as if they based their entire sound on Depeche Mode's "Behind the Wheel" on their first album. But they certainly could have done worse!

Even in those early days, though, Red Flag showed the potential to really become a powerhouse band in the genre. Unfortunately, the bottom dropped out of the genre at the same time, but Red Flag has been able to keep going, producing two (three if you count the remix album Naive Dance) more albums and an EP or two in the meantime. Throughout this period they've also worked to establish a sound more unique and less dependant on the Depeche Mode derivative they provided with the very first album.
