The song for this week is certainly better known: "867-5309" by Tommy Tutone. This song was considered new wave, but not in the sense that many of us use that word: for one thing, this was a very popular and mainstream song. In fact, one of the most popular jokes of the year was to call the number the song is famous for and ask for "Jenny," the popular bathroom wall hooker made famous by the song. Indeed, the song seems kinda sad, as "Tommy" croons in his labored voice about how he can't go on without the girl, and then we find that he's never even met her: her "ad" in the men's room was just very appealing I guess. Anyway, for anyone who's heard the song, which should be most everyone alive that year, the song is a great genre piece of 1983, and a great example of what made 80s music so much fun, and so good compared to the overly dramatic, trying-really-hard-to-be-artsy-fartsy-90s music.
