For this next song of the week, I'll choose "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" by Dead or Alive. DoA always had a weird image to me, and who can blame me: the lead singer had the whitest face this side of a snowman, and a very androgenous look to him, and his distinctive voice didn't exactly make you think everything was alright with him either. Perhaps, in some ways, it would be better to choose their most popular song, "Brand New Lover" as a better representation of what the group was capable of, but "You Spin Me" was, and still is, my favorite song of theirs. The frenetic pace, reminiscent of today's techno, but with the sensibilities of an 80's pop song is a winner no matter how you look at it. It's not suprising, though, that DoA had so few hits: the album Youthquake on which "You Spin Me" is found is extremely monotonous: almost all the songs sound very much alike.
